Former “X Factor” U.K. contestant Katie Waissel, 26, has split from her husband Brad Alphonso after a little more than two months of marriage. The breakup happened in late November 2012, but the Mirror’s Sunday People broke the news on December 30, 2012.
Waissel and Alphonso (who is a model) had a whirlwind courtship of only four months, and the couple wed in a secret ceremony in Alphonso’s hometown of New Orleans on September 9, 2012. The marriage was over after 10 weeks, according to the Sunday People.
A source told the Sunday People: “Katie did fall head over heals in love with Brad but it was all too rushed. It soon became clear that it wasn’t going to work and she got fed up with him. They got married in a very intimate magical ceremony in September but by November Katie had had enough. It was a very brave thing for her to do but she’s a strong woman who knows what she wants – and it wasn’t Brad.”
On December 29, 2012, Waissel tweeted this cryptic message which seems to imply that she is talking about Alphonso: “I should have known right from the start that he was just a work of art.”
Waissel came in seventh place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010.
Sources told the Sunday People that Waissel, who now lives in Los Angeles, spent Christmas with her family in England before flying back to Los Angeles. She is no longer wearing her wedding ring. The Sunday People did not say if divorce papers have been filed yet, but it seems inevitable that the former couple will get divorced.
Waissel was in a relationship with Capital FM DJ Greg Burns, 26, up until May 2012. The Sunday People says that in 2009, she “almost married producer Philip Schwinger in Las Vegas, but they both backed out at the last minute.”
Waissel was a controversial contestant on “The X Factor” U.K., since it was revealed during her time on the show that she had a record deal with independent U.S. label Chamberlain Records. Waissel had planned to release music on the label under the name Lola Fontaine. “The X Factor” rules state that contestants cannot be signed to a record deal when they are competing on the show.
However, Waissel was allowed to continue in the competition once she got out of the record deal.
Waissel currently does not have a record deal, but she released her eponymous debut solo album on iTunes in March 2011.
In July 2011, she announced that she was in the rock band Red Velvet Lovers, whose name was later shortened to Red Velvet.
This is not the first time that Waissel has tried to reinvent herself. In addition to her former stage name Lola Fontaine, she went under the name Katie Vogel on the YouTube series “Green Eyed World.”
