In a statement released on Dec. 6, 2012 – the FDA warned that Kasel’s “Nature’s Deli CHicken Jerky Dog Treats” with lot code of BESTBY061913DEN should not be fed to pets due to possible Salmonella contamination. The treats were made and packaged in the United States by Kasel, and were sold in Costco stores in the Denver, Colorado area.
Kasel has chosen not to voluntarily recall their product. The FDA is working with Costco to try to remove all the affected products from the shelves. Costco is also trying to contact customers who may have purchased the product to provide additional instructions.
Since this is a popular gift for people with dogs, the product may be widespread. The packages are 3 pounds, flexible plastic which is yellow, blue, green and red with black and white print. There is also a photo of a dog on the front panel and clear panels so you can see the jerky treats inside. The lot code BESTBY061913DEN is on the back of the package in the clear section.
Kasel has had recent recalls of “Boots & Barkley” Roasted American Pig Ears, “Boots & Barkley” American Variety Pack Dog Treats, “Nature’s Deli” Chicken Jerky Dog Treats and “Boots & Barkley” American Bully Sticks – all because of possible Salmonella contamination.
All of these Kasel treats are manufactured in the United States and are not part of the ongoing FDA investigations of jerky treats manufactured in China.
Consumers should dispose of these products carefully, where people and other animals cannot get to them. Salmonella can be passed along through handling, so wash your hands thoroughly after handling. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to become severely ill from Salmonella infection. Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic, and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has these symptoms or has eaten the affected product, contact your veterinarian immediately. As with people, pets who are elderly, very young or have impaired immune systems are more vulnerable.
