God is a Triune God. This is an astounding fact and has a tremendous impact for any and all understandings about who God is and his purposes for all of man. Many books can be and have been written on this subject but all of them collectively could not do justice to the intricacies of meaning held in the faith in God as Triune. Just as no one throughout all of time or eternity can ever know all about God; no article could do so either.
My intention is to put forth a bit of imagery to help anyone to begin or to better understand the Triune existence of the One True God.
A number of weeks ago I heard a statement by the pastor of our local church that God was a Triune God. I knew this very well but he also went on to say that if God were not a Triune God then he could not fellowship with himself. The whole purpose of his sermon was to help the people to understand that God was not just an “out there” entity (even though he is) but also a very intimate presence who desires a closeness within man as well. When he stated that because God was a Triune God he could fellowship with himself, I felt a sense of explosion of imagery in my spirit for a deeper understanding of Triune.
I actually saw an image of God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit all seated together at a round table conversing with each other. It had never occurred to me so much before that the Trinity had fellowship with one another. Of course I knew that they were three persons, three identities, but One in thought, power and purpose. In order to help myself understand the Trinity I had always thought of God the Father as the “head guy”(no disrespect intended here). God the Father would “think it”, Jesus “spoke it” and the Holy Spirit “did it”. The idea of the Trinity having each other for fellowship astounded me unto a deeper realization of what God had done for man. God does not need anyone or anything to be complete or happy. He did not nor does he need the likes of man. God did what he did for man purely because he wanted to include man in the fellowship of the Godhead.
Fellowship from BVU Online University is defined as: 1.
a. The condition of sharing similar interests, ideals, or experiences, as by reason of profession, religion, or nationality.
b. The companionship of individuals in a congenial atmosphere and on equal terms.
2. A close association of friends or equals sharing similar interests.
3. Friendship; comradeship.
While this definition as it relates to God is certainly limited, it does give the human mind something tangible from which to make references to an infinite God and how he could be in fellowship with himself. Imagine, if you will, having a moment of carrying on and laughing with your closest friends with whom you share your deepest secrets and joys. Now imagine that for a Triune God as well.
As I looked at the image in my heart, I felt a sense of closeness and friendship and equality in power and purpose among them. A feeling of exclusivity. One must also realize here that God is so totally perfect and holy that no human could enter his presence unless cleansed of all unrighteousness. Anything of thought, deed or attitude not in line with the Godhead would disqualify any human for such a prize as to be in God’s presence or to fellowship with him. There is no way in because every man falls short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). It was then that I was reminded of why Jesus died on that cross. He was God, the creator, holy and perfect. HE paid the price for sin (death) so that all who would belive in him could not only be saved but enter into that fellowship (at that round table) with a Holy God while here on earth. Jesus is the key through which all men must enter into that Triune relationship.
Knowing that God was everywhere all the time brought a sweeter understanding to the prayer that Jesus prayed in John 17:21. He prayed that all of the believers at that moment and into the future would be one as he and the Father were one..one in the other. Another article from thechristian.org stated that being in the Triuneness of God was like going down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and looking up. You are IN God when you accept Christ and all of his immenseness and he dwells within you by his Holy Spirit. All this comes by way of Christ and accepting that you cannot enter any other way.
