For years there has been speculation that a correlation exists between violent movies and video games and actual homicides. Apparently, some actors believe that violence in films actually do relate to criminal behavior. According to reports from Daily Herald on Sunday, Dec. 16 Jamie Foxx agreed that the film industry may be influential in contributing to homicidal behavior in people.
The Newtown, Connecticut shooting which happened on Friday has caused celebrities such as Jamie Foxx, Quentin Tarantino and Kerry Washington to revisit the impact violence in films may have on people.
Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington are currently promoting their latest movie “Django Unchained,” a Quentin Tarantino film. The upcoming movie is about slavery and features quite a bit of violence. However, it appears Jamie Foxx recognizes that this type of violent movie can have adverse effects on people.
“We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn’t have a sort of influence. It does,” Fox said in an interview.
Jamie Foxx’s statement is a bit ironic considering he stars in another violent film. Fans wonder if this latest horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut will lead to a change in the type of movies Jamie Foxx chooses in the future.
Quentin Tarantino who is known for creating violent films such as “Kill Bill” and his most recent movie “Django Unchained,” disagrees with the assessment that violent movies have a negative influence on people.
Tarantino went on a bit of a tangent, explaining that he was tired of defending his films each time the nation was shocked by gun violence. He stated that “tragedies happen” and that blame should fall on those guilty of the crimes.
Kerry Washington encourages conversation about violence to happen. Kerry feels that violence should not just be seen as a form of entertainment, the importance of the impact of such crimes should be discussed among people.
“I do think that it’s important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills,” said the star about the tragedy.
Many people feel that discussions about the impact of violent crimes seem to happen after the fact. When a tragedy happens such as this horrific shooting in Connecticut people band together to figure out how to stop it from happening again. There are no simple answers. Some believe that there should be more gun control, while others think everyone should arm themselves. Then there are those who think violent movies and video games should be taken out of stores.
Do you think violence should be taken out of movies and video games? Would tougher gun laws help alleviate some of these crimes? Or should people start buying weapons?
