The Bedlam Series, also known as Oklahoma State versus Oklahoma, is one of the most heated rivalries in college football. Even so, it is very lopsided, with Oklahoma holding a 81-18-7 edge according to the OSU website okstate.com.
The Oklahoma website Soonersports.com, says the series record is 82-17-7. In those early years it was at times hard to define teams and records were not always kept with great care.
The game is always big from an emotional bragging rights standpoint. Oklahoma State was a 44-10 winner in last year’s Bedlam game. The victory clinched OSU’s first Big 12 championship and the school’s first BCS appearance. OSU travels to Norman this year and the Cowboys have not won there since 2002.
Last year at this time OSU was still in the national championship picture and Oklahoma was also highly ranked.
This year both teams are ranked.
But for many fans the game is still about OSU and OU going to battle.
The series dates back to 1904 and has been played 105 times. In the early days when college football was still little more than an extra curricular club, is where the “Bedlam Series” title came from. In one of those early games, on a kick, the ball sailed out of the field and down a hill into a creek – or so the legend goes – and that was where the title was born. Someone said when these two teams play, anything can happen, and its Bedlam, and the series name was born.
While OU holds a big edge in victories, in recent years especially, the games have been close. Oklahoma has won eight straight in the series, but in that period OU has outscored OSU 239-231. Three of the last eight games have been decided by six points or less.
Two years ago OU won 47-41. There were 31 points scored in the final four minutes. The score was tied at 24 going into the final quarter. That game lived up to the Bedlam billing.
The last tiime OSU won was 2002 and took a 38-28 win. OSU also won in 2001 with a 16-13 win, and is one of the few times OSU has won consecutive games.
The late 1990’s were good for the Cowboys in the series, winning games in 1995, 97 and 98.
There have been two 15 year droughts for Oklahoma State in the series. The last long drought without a win was even longer. OU won all the games between 1976 and 1992 when the teams tied. OSU did not get a win until 1995, making the drought without a win 19 years.
The longest time period for OSU to dominate the series was in the 1920s and 30s. From 1922 to 1942 OSU held a 5-3-5 edge.
