Gaetano Iacono is an Italian American actor who was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He started acting in the year 2000 and has appeared in several movies and gangster films such as; Omerta, GOAT, Hellfire, Street Lure, Life’s Decisions, Front Man, Twists of Fate, They’re Just My Friends and Doughboys.
Gary Miller: How did you get involved in acting and the entertainment business?
Gaetano Iacono: I started in this business by accident , there was a listing for a casting call in my neighborhood and I decided to go down and see what the deal was. So I show up and see that there must have been about 150 guys that look almost just like me. I figured that it was all over right there but I was wrong. I met with the Director and he told me to keep my next two weeks open because he was going to call me in. I had fun and made some friends and also went and got myself addicted to acting. I have been at it ever since .
GM: Where are you from?
GI: Originally from Brooklyn and now Staten Island NY , I love NY but that’s not to say that I wouldn’t mind being forced to buy a little something in LA someday.
GM: You have done work on television, stage and film, which of the three do you prefer and why?
GI: I prefer to work on film and television more than I do stage, It’s nice to know that your work will be around forever after the film or show is completed. But I do have total respect for the stage actor as well. They are two totally different types of acting.
GM: Do you think there will ever be a Sopranos movie and what was is your feeling about the way the show ended?
GI: I think the Sopranos ending was great. Tony Soprano was shot and from his POV you seen it just like he or anyone would have if they would have gotten shot. LIGHTS OUT, period. They can always make a movie if they wanted to if they decide to take it from that point and just wake him up in the hospital and go from there. But only if they cast me, otherwise just leave it alone.
GM: As a filmmaker yourself, what is the biggest obstacle when making an independent film?
GI: The biggest obstacle for independent filmmakers is , was and always will be the financing. It seems that everyone is ready to make a movie until its actually time to spend the money. I understand it though, It’s a bad economy and everyone need to save for that rainy day. I have a couple of great movies just sitting and begging to be made.
GM: Do you prefer to work behind the scenes or in front?
GI: I prefer to be in front of the camera Gary. Being behind the camera takes a real artist , maybe someday later on in life maybe.
GM: Who are some of the actors/actresses/directors you would like to work with?
GI: There are many actors and directors that I would be delighted to work with. WOW, where do I start, would love to work with Ron Howard someday and of course Marty Scorsese , Tom Hanks just to name some directors. And as far as actors go I’d love to work with Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Stiller, Will Smith, John Travolta ,Cathy Bates, Robert DeNero because he is probably the first movie star I ever recognized. But in all honesty I’d just like to be working steady with whoever is willing to work with me. Even if it’s a first time actor.
GM: What is your favorite movie?
GI: Well I guess my all time favorite movie of all time is probably Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Loved it then and still love it now. Rocky is a very close second.
GM: Favorite Gangster Film?
GI: My favorite Gangster film is Casino and The Godfather Part 2 .
GM: Who are some of the actors that inspire you?
GI: Some actors that inspire me are guys like John Turturro, Stan Tucci , Joe Pesci and all the guys I listed before.
GM: Being from NY how is the scene in LA compared to NY?
GI: I think that NY actors are great for certain roles and LA actors are great also. Honestly, I don’t think that either has the edge. It’s all about the role and the actor. Some got it and some don’t. Don’t matter where you come from.
GM: Do you have a website?
GI: I do, its www.gaetanoiacono.com I have a few clips up on it go check it out .
GM: What advice do you have for aspiring actors and filmmakers?
GI: Well the best advice I can give to any actor including myself is simply just never give up, you are an empire and empires are not built overnight. Have fun and filter out negative energy. There’s more than enough to drain you in showbiz, don’t waste your energy on negatives. Think positive all the time.
GM: What was it like seeing yourself on the big screen for the first time?
GI: the first time I seen myself on the screen I was very critical of myself and found it to be very weird but now I just accept it for what it is and don’t think about it. There are going to be enough critics out there as it is anyway.
GM: Thank you Gaetano and is there anything else you would like to add?
GI: All in all as an actor I would love to be successful enough and be able to support my family solely on my acting. And hopefully make films that entertain everyone and leave new actors feeling about me the same way I feel about those people I listed earlier in this interview myself. Thank you so very much for the honor of being asked for an interview.
