Francine Brokaw recently published a book called “Beyond the Red Carpet.” In this book, she talks about her life as an entertainment writer. She has interviewed some of the biggest names in television and movies during her career.
In her new book, she spoke to several other journalists about their experience in the business. This book is one that you won’t want to put down when you start reading it. It is very interesting to hear the stories of her career. They stories are interesting, funny, and it is great to hear of the big names they have been given the chance to interview.
I was recently able to speak to Francine Brokaw over email in an interview. Here is what she said about her book “Beyond the Red Carpet:”
Do you work as a freelance writer or work for one company at this time?
I am lucky because I do write for the Family Magazine Properties, but I also freelance for Suite101.com as well as other sites. I have been with LA Family Magazine for over a decade, and the publisher allows me to freelance at other outlets. It’s a win-win situation.
What made you decide to write a book?
I wanted to write the book to dispel some of the myths about my profession. First, we are not paparazzi. We are hard working journalists. Second, our lives are not glamorous. While we do attend some pretty highbrow functions, for the most part, our jobs consist of a lot of research and work (sprinkled once in awhile with a glitzy event). Third, I wanted to give readers an inside look at a side of Hollywood they have never been privy to before. This is truly a first-of-its-kind book with stories from me as well as 30 of my colleagues.
Who is your favorite person that you have interviewed?
I have a few favorites: Julie Andrews, Kevin Spacey, Chris Lemmon and Ashley Judd first come to mind.
Was it difficult to get all of your colleagues to work with you on this book?
Actually, most of my colleagues I approached were happy to be interviewed. One of them even said, “Why didn’t one of us think of this sooner?” There were a few that didn’t want to be included for various reasons, and I respected that. I looked for a variety of journalists from print, online, radio, and TV with different personalities in order to bring a wide range of career experiences to the readers, and I believe I have accomplished that.
Do you have plans for any more books in the future?
Yes, I do. I have several ideas for future books; some of them have been discussed with my publisher. Some are non-fiction, and some are fiction. We’ll have to wait and see!
If you are interested in reading her book, it is available for purchase from Amazon.com. You can buy a book version or Kindle version. This is a great addition to your library.
