Having trouble choosing your New Year’s resolution this year? You are not alone. After years of making resolutions that are usually broken before Superbowl Sunday, many people simply abandon this tradition. Why not try an innovative and easy resolution this year that you can really stick with?
Unlike Lent, where you sacrificially give up something for the fourty days prior to Easter, New Year’s resolutions are supposed to be a permanent change for the better in your life. Common resolutions are: lose weight, quit smoking, start an exercise regimen or eat healthier. These are all great resolutions; however they are large commitments and results are usually dismal.
So make your New Year’s resolution attainable by setting the bar a little lower. You want to succeed, so make your resolution at an achievable level. For example: if your New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking, change it to limiting smoking to only at home. Whiling quitting smoking is a great resolution; it can be a difficult lifestyle change. Start with smaller goals such as no smoking in the car or at work.
Here are some other innovative and easy to attain New Year’s resolutions:
- Find peace in your life. It could be emotional, spiritual or even financial peace. As a way to reduce stress in your life, find a simpler way to deal with stressful situations. When you find peace in a situation, it makes it a lot easier to achieve the task.
- A little goes a long way. Not much of a domestic diva? Does housework usually take a backseat to just about anything else? Put a chart on the fridge of household chores and do one chore a day. Little by little, your house will look better and you will feel better.
- Choice the simple path. Is it simpler to make a quick grilled cheese and open a can of soup or to hop in the car and go grab fast food? (The answer should be grilled cheese and soup) Don’t resolve to give up fast food altogether, as there are times when that is truly the simple choice; however learn to have simple options at home so that you do not have to use gas or spare money.
- Download the human app. How many apps do you download in a month? How many face to face connections to you have in that same month? This year, put down the electronics occasionally and go meet friends or family in person. Sunday afternoon visits are still a treasured pastime.
Make your New Year’s resolutions with the thought of smaller is better. If you want to actually achieve your goals, set yourself up for an actual win.
