In my work with job hunters and career changers, most of them are close in age to me. Some in their 40’s, 50’s, and yes even their 60’s. Meaning: they are mature and accomplished people. They are experienced and tested. They have “been there and done that.”
So does that mean they are ready for the scrap heap? Far from it. In my view, they are now at a point in their careers for greatness.
They have honed their skills, acquired knowledge and wisdom, and they bring tremendous expertise to the table. They are ready to write their book and teach their class.
Last week, I gave a talk to the PSG of Central New Jersey, wherein I made this point, and suggested that, in 2013, they set a goal to do just that: Write your Book. Teach your Class.
Let’s look at each of these.
Early in 2012, I decided it was time to write a book. I had been thinking about it for many years. I had started blogging in 2004 with the thought that it would help me write on a regular basis and prepare for the eventual book.
What really pushed me to action was the article by Dr. Heidi Grant Halvorson about what successful people do. Reading her points, it dawned on me that I was procrastinating terribly. What I needed was a swift kick.
With my wife Joan’s motivating influence, and Heidi Grant Halvorson’s compelling research findings, I galvanized into action. My first book, To Your Success came out in February. My second book, Lead the Way arrived in November. And the third book, to be called Change For The Better, will be next.
With regard to teaching a class, I asked my audience at PSG this question: how many of you are experts in something? Due to modesty, only a few hands went up. I challenged them to be honest with themselves. Each one of them has an area of expertise, be it in computers, marketing, engineering, sales, administration, teaching or whatever.
To get started, I suggested they think of it this way: What if you had one hour to stand up and convey three points about the topic of your choice?
2013 is your opportunity to put yourself out there and go for greatness. Will you do it?
