When learning flower arrangements by taking lessons at a flower design school, it is so important to clarify what kind of purpose you learn and what your goal is. Depending on the purpose and goal, the way you approach to programs and the way you learn is different. From time to time, we are asked by future students “What should I start from in learning flower arrangements ?”. Frankly speaking, this kind of question is quite understandable because many students cannot find a clear picture about his/her future situation after learning flower arrangements except limited number of students who have very clear planning backed up by a sufficient budget.
Take students from (and in) Japan for instance, most of them start from Fresh Flower Arrangement Elementary Course and then proceed to Intermediate Course, Advanced Course and even to Instructor Course. This is the typical way they learn at our school and it is a most ideal way of learning floral designs if they would really like to master flower arrangements. Once they follow this process until completing Instructor Course, they can typically master flower arrangements and they can earn decent skills not only for duplicating designs made by instructors but also making their own decorations which reflect their ideas and concepts. Therefore doing wedding decorations or funeral floral arrangements after completing and digesting curriculum of Advanced Course and Instructor Course is no big deal.
Quite frankly speaking there are two issues in above mentioned way:
A. It takes lots of time to complete all courses from elementary to instructor course.
B. It costs lots of money to complete all courses mentioned in the above.
Namely due to financial and work load reasons, only limited number of very enthusiastic students can justify themselves for spending lots of time and tuition as well.
In Asian countries especially in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China, there seem to exist traditional cultures which allow people to spend time and money for learning and mastering something in their daily life. And according to the their “dictionary”, learning means trying to master something by spending a long time such as a few or several years. As a matter of fact, no matter what kind of skill he/she would like to earn, it is totally impossible to master it in a couple of days, weeks or even in a few months.
This can be said not only regarding floral arrangements, but also all other skills such as dancing, baseballs, soccer, swimming, judo, painting, calligraphy, abacus and foreign languages whatsoever. It is totally impossible to master these arts and sports in a couple of weeks or months. People who mastered such sports and arts must have learned and practiced at least a few years. (So the average level of ordinary people’s skill is considered decent although there are only limited number of extremely outstanding athlete or artist like a genius). No matter whether earned skills bring profit or not, many people are happy to learn and earn skills to acquire and develop a culture.
However due to the difference in culture and customs, only limited number of people who are quite exceptional are willing to spend considerable amount of time and money for mastering something in the United States. Especially in the case of flower designs, most students spend only couple of days by joining one day seminar or only a few weeks programs. Therefore absolute number of students who proceeded to Advanced Course of Instructor Course in California is pretty limited. As already mentioned, average American people are satisfied with joining one day seminar (or very short course). People who are little bit more enthusiastic take lessons for a few weeks to a month. Quite few students proceed to Intermediate Course after completing Elementary Course.
According to my perception, it looks like majority of American people feel like spending time and money for things which will bring profit rather than investing to acquire and develop a culture. This means that some people who would like to have their own floral shop or engage in making wedding flower decorating services justify themselves for spending a considerable amount of time and money for learning flower arrangements. This is quite understandable because the capitalism in this country is so matured. (Consequently average level of ordinary people’s skill is less high although the skill and power of limited number of athletes and artists is unbelievably high like a genius).
Due to above mentioned situation, here is a dilemma as follows:
Namely people do not want to spend long time and much money. Yet they would like to learn flower designs for doing floral business.
What is the most practical and realistic solution ? Or where should we compromise to clear this issue ? As a result of careful study, we ended up with implementing the compromised way of approach as stated below:
- Have them join Fresh Flower Arrangement Elementary Course (This course is mandatory to earn basic skills which form foundation of techniques. Therefore this course is required regardless of the purpose and goal of each student).
- After completing the elementary course, ideal way is proceeding to Intermediate Course which offers so many designs and tuition is fairly expensive. Instead of moving to Intermediate Course, have them join a business oriented course (by skipping Intermediate Course) such as wedding decoration courses and/or funeral arrangement course.
Namely students who like (or need) a short cut to business oriented arrangements can save time and budget by way of jumping to wedding and funeral programs immediately after completing Fresh Flower Arrangement Elementary Course although it is highly recommended to proceed to Intermediate, Advanced and Instructor Course for those who really want to master a wide range and overall floral art or would like to engage in teaching flower arrangements by having their own classes.
California Flower Art Academy has been engaged in teaching a variety of floral designs since 1990 as a floral school certified by Flower Decorators Association (Tokyo Japan).
Each student can find his/her most favorite course among a WIDE RANGE OF PROGRAMS by well considering his/her taste, budget, purpose and the goal for learning flower arrangements.
