New Yorkers and New Jerseyites continue recovery efforts following the destructive effects of Hurricane Sandy and Nor’easter Athena. Thousands are still without power and heat, and drivers are impacted by the first gas rationing since the 1970s. In an effort to reach out to neighbors and communities, countless bars, restaurants and related staff are offering patrons the opportunity to band together, raising money, goods and much-needed manpower. Below, a few of the many upcoming events:
Pegu Club: If you want to know where your favorite bartender is on Sunday, November 11, look no further than this institution to craft cocktails. From 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. join them for Murry Aid & Sandy Relief, a 50/50 Fundraiser. Seattle bartending legend Murray Stenson has been behind the bar, earning respect and building friendships for over 30 years. A heart ailment, requiring expensive treatment, became a national call to arms in the past month among fellow bartenders and those who love their drinks. The Pegu fundraiser was already in the works when Sandy hit, so Pegu founder Audrey Saunders has returned to NYC to head up what promises to be a huge event in the cocktail world. $13 cocktails will be mixed up by city superstars like Richard Boccato (Dutch Kills), Meaghan Dorman (Raines Law Room), Giuseppe Gonzalez (Golden Cadillac), Julie Reiner (Clover Club), Toby Cecchini, author and bartender credited with popularizing the Cosmo, and many more. Proceeds will be spit between both important causes. Find out more at the event’s Facebook page. 77 W Houston (2nd Floor), 212.473.PEGU, peguclub.com
Highlands: The Scotland-themed gastropub experienced the West Village blackout and is intent on paying back the goodwill it received. On Saturday, November 10, participate in a Hurricane Sandy Relief Fundraiser and Silent Auction, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with all proceeds going to New York Cares. Among the items up for bid: Marc Jacobs clothing, a signed Annie Leibovitz print, a bottle of Dom Perignon and a weekend getaway at Surf Lodge, Montauk. 150 W 10th St, 212.229.2670 highlands-nyc.com
Just Restaurant: A Night of New Jersey Charities takes place Tuesday, November 13. The evening kicks off at 7pm with a fashion show, honoring breast cancer survivors, from Diane & Company featuring the cast of Jersey Couture and six survivors from the South Jersey Breast Cancer Coalition. A silent auction will raise funds for both hurricane victims and breast cancer awareness groups. No admission, but both donations for the Red Cross, and food and clothing for the Salvation Army, are gladly accepted. 2280 Route 9 South (Old Bridge, NJ), 732.707.4800 justrestaurantnj.com
Carmine’s: All locations of this tourist Italian mainstay are offering diners the opportunity to show they care and still savor a giant bowl of spaghetti. From November 6th through November 13th, Carmine’s restaurants will offer a special cocktail featuring Absolut Orient apple, ginger liqueur, cranberry and lemon. One dollar from each cocktail will go to the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Multiple Locations in New York, New Jersey and Washington D.C. carminesnyc.com
Meat Week: The popular carnivore-focused tasting event shifts gears to raise funds for businesses heavily impacted by the hurricane. From November 3rd through November 12th, find classes, cooking demonstrations, locavore presentations, tasting events and more throughout town and up the Hudson River. meatweeknyc.com
Broad Appeal at Macao: The bartenders of LUPEC NYC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails) had to postpone their Broad Appeal event thanks to the hurricane, so they’re reconvening on Tuesday, November 13 “to show Sandy how a lady should behave!” From 8p.m. to 12 a.m., enjoy $10 cocktails from Demi Monde/Maison Premiere bartender Natasha David and her celebrity barback Jeremy Oertel (head bartender at Donna). Proceeds help support the rebuilding efforts of RestoreRedHook.org Macao Trading Company, 311 Church Street, 212.431.8750 macaonyc.com
TastingTable.com is hosting a fundraiser at their SoHo test kitchen on Wednesday, November 14. Beginning at 6:30, guests can enjoy a casual cocktail party and hearty fare from executive chef Brendan McHale, benefiting the Food Bank for New York City. Tickets cost $100 (plus a $6.49 processing fee online) and all proceeds from tickets sales will be donated, along with matching funds from Tasting Table. Attendees are also encouraged to bring canned foods and winter jackets. 495 Broome Street (2nd Floor), TastingTableHurricaneRelief.EventBrite.com
