Hurricane Sandy is a devastating storm that displaced many families and resulted in loss of life. What is even more traumatic is that these poor people on the east coast were faced with more storms to include a snowfall. When residents were required to evacuate their homes, many had to leave their precious pets behind. Help is needed in reuniting families and pets, as they try to rebuild their lives and homes. If you are interested in helping pet families, you can contact your local Rockford-area Humane Society as listed below or one closest to your home to make donations directed towards Hurricane Sandy victims.
So far, it has been reported that Proctor and Gamble donated about 88 tons of pet food to help with the nutritional needs of the displaced pets of the hurricane. Various animal welfare organizations helped to distribute the foods to the affected animals in the New York/New Jersey areas. Other donations are needed in order to rescue, care for and reunite pets and families, along with aiding in their clean up and rebuilding.
As cleanup and rescue efforts continue, it is not clear how many pets have been displaced from their families. There are currently about 400 animals temporarily homed in New York shelters. Many volunteers are trying to help reunite these pets with their owners but it can be futile in the midst of continuing disaster.
There have been some good results with found pets. A man noted a litter of kittens with their mom on the outside his home during the storm and was able to bring them to safety. He is now planning to adopt one of the kittens. Another Good Samaritan also found a stray kitten that needed rescue. Once the storm cleared, a woman was reunited with her lost cat and a dog thought to be up for adoption was overjoyed to be claimed by its family.
Such stories go on and on, even with workers helping others. As volunteers and workers were helping to save lives, their own homes were destroyed and pets lost, which was the case with Yammie, the pitbull mix. She ended up in a shelter until dad was done working to help others. Victims had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave pets behind because rescue shelters would not allow the pets, which happened with Penny the cock-a-poo. Luckily they were reunited with their dog.
All these people and their families, including the precious pets, need our help both physically and financially. It makes you think, “What would I do in such a situation?” If you are forced to evacuate your home, you would never leave behind your kids and spouse but pets are family too. Most authorities now realize that if pets are not considered when ordering evacuation, many residents will be put in danger. People find it difficult to leave any loved ones behind.
Before facing such a disaster of any kind, consider putting some type of escape plan into practice to save your family. A Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 now make it mandatory for local and state governments to include pets in emergency situations. No one should ever be forced to abandon someone they love so dearly such as the beloved family pets.
