Intro: Parade magazine’s Hugh Jackman interview really gets to the heart of the actor’s process in playing both the Wolverine and the iconic “Les Miz” character, Jean Valjean.
Actor Hugh Jackman may make playing Jean Valjean in the movie “Les Miserables” look effortless. Heck, he may even make playing the Wolverine in Marvel Comics comic books-come-to-life look easy but as said in a recent interview, making the transformation into these characters was anything but.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine: Character Transformation Gets Harder as a Person Gets Older
Parade got right to it. Actor Hugh Jackman looks amazing as Wolverine in the upcoming Marvel Comics movie “The Wolverine.” The magazine wanted to know if the actor had the advantage of having any CGI done on his body to make it look as ripped as it does in “The Wolverine” movie photos.
In the interview, Hugh Jackman admitted
I keep thinking, “Come on, you spend millions on CGI, can’t you throw a quarter million my way for visual effects so I can eat pizza and drink beer and still look great?” No, I had to do it the hard way. Let me tell you, at 44 it’s not getting easier.
X-Men Character Scoop by Actor Hugh Jackman: Wolverine is at a Low Point
He also gave a bit of a scoop when it comes to the psyche of the Marvel superhero as well as to some possible cameos in the film.
You want to get me into trouble, don’t you? [laughs] Okay, the movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him. And there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it.
An Oscar for Actor Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean?
Jackman also spoke of what a challenge it was to play Jean Valjean in the adaption of Victor Hugo’s novel “Les Miserables.” He has said that actually the physical requirements for his character, Jean Valjean were more strident than they were for the Wolverine character. He had to dance between being gaunt looking at the beginning of the film when Valjean is just finishing up his 19 years in prison but still maintain his strength since the character is known for his immense physical prowess.
And despite getting plenty of Oscar buzz for “Best Actor” for the role, in the interview, Hugh Jackman admitted that he had strong doubts about his ability to play one of the most beloved characters in the canon of literature. But he credits his wife for helping him through that.
I remember after a particularly bad day at rehearsals, I told my wife, Deb, “I might have bitten off more than I can chew here. Maybe I’m not the right person.” She just cut me off and said, “Hugh, if you didn’t feel like that you wouldn’t be right for the part. You should be daunted by this challenge.” And she’s so smart; she added, “Use the fear. Work harder. Get in there.”
Actor Hugh Jackman will also reprise his Wolverine character in the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past” directed by Bryan Singer.
