Health and Wellness Coaching is about learning how to create your own healthy habits success. This means instead of starting on the outside, such as ‘Oh dear! I have to lose 30 pounds so I’ll go buy this book!’ we start with the individual’s lifestyle as a whole.
Instead of jumping to action, we start with some thinking and some planning. We take a moment to look around, discover inner and outer obstacles, and dig up our strengths. Instead of heading straight into the dangerous diet jungle, we need to create a map, a strong inner motivation connected to our biggest values, and a path.
Any journey needs some planning. There is the end destination and the vehicle used to get there, be it a bicycle or a jet plane. Then we’ll decide if we want to take the main street or rather meander through some side streets making some discoveries along the way. What we don’t want to do is get lost right away, then turn around to the beginning point, and then get stuck.
But, one might argue, my goals are so big and far away, and you have no idea of all the obstacles I face every day! Fair enough. The inner voice says ‘I can’t lose 30 pounds!’. Fair enough. So how can we create a bridge between here and our ideal self? The future self who is 30 pounds lighter does not exist (yet) and if you think about it, the only thing you have in your control is the here and now. And yes, the smallest things do count up.
