- History of New Orleans Saints cheerleaders
The New Orleans Saints had dance team cheerleaders dating back to 1967. The original Saints cheerleaders were called the Louisiannes. The Saints had to quickly change the name of the cheerleaders to the Saints Dancers though, because local high school cheerleaders were already using the Louisiannes name.
In 1968, the Saints changed the cheerleaders name to the Mademoiselles, and then again to the Mam’selles from 1969 to 1971. The Saints then discontinued their dance squad until it was revived in 1975 as the Bonnes Amiees.
The name was changed again in 1978 to the Angels, but after a couple of incidents, including a Angels cheerleader posing in Playboy, the Saints disbanded their dance cheerleaders squad.
In 1987, Saints GM Jim Finks brought back the dance team cheerleaders. A contest among fans led to the cheerleaders being called the Saintsations.
