Hartford Books Examiner welcomes MJ Allaire on this, the ninth day of our Holiday Book Giveaway Extravaganza.
MJ Allaire grew up in South Florida and joined the Navy after graduating high school; she was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where she met and married a submariner. Ten years later, she and her family moved to Connecticut. Following a divorce, Allaire found herself a single mother of three with a full-time job; her journey toward self-discovery led to a passion for storytelling and literacy. Allaire’s ultimate ambition is to be a positive role model for children. She loves to visit schools and libraries to talk to children about reading and writing.
Allaire is the author of the popular Denicalis Dragon Chronicles fantasy series for young adults. The fifth – and potentially final – entry is anticipated for release in 2013. Her other titles include a work of non-fiction, My Blissful Life As a Submariner’s Wife, and this year’s YA thriller, Dead Reckoning. In addition to writing, Allaire and her husband, R Patrick Martin, now release others’ books through Bookateer Publishing. They also maintain two websites – www.getkidstoread.org and www.booksbyteenauthors.com – that promote youth reading and writing.
From the publisher – Dragon’s Blood:
What begins as an adventure in a previously undiscovered cave quickly becomes the adventure of a lifetime. Four children from the quiet village of Uncava discover a hidden cave in the Hampa Mountain Range near their home. They eagerly explore the shadows within, searching for the unknown as well as another entrance, when they quickly find themselves lost and ill-equipped for a rapidly unfolding adventure. What they find within the winding tunnels beneath the mountain is much bigger than any of them had anticipated – much bigger than they had ever dreamed. Their exploration of the cave brings them face to face with mysterious creatures, unanswered questions, unexplained magic, unimaginable anguish and difficult decisions. How far will you go for an adventure? How far will you journey in search of your dreams? Their adventure is what dreams are made of.
Now, MJ Allaire shares some recommendations for readers of all ages…
1. Author Christina Cody recently launched a book called “Monster Reader” – it’s for 4-10 year olds and is about two children who go to a library and learn about monsters who eat words/books. It’s a fantastic book and she’s a wonderful author.
2. Author Barry Eva has a book for ages 8-88 called “Across the Pond” …it’s an adorable story about a boy from England who meets a girl from America. Barry has an interesting way with words and teaches us about the difference in the two cultures.
3. For any adults looking for new reading material, I’ve recently finished listening to the audio book for “Mystic River”. I loved the movie, but it did not at all compare to the book itself, which was absolutely fantastically written. I never liked Sean Penn until I saw him in this movie, and I could totally see his character while I was listening to the audio version. Kevin Bacon is in the movie also, and of course, everyone likes him. J
With special thanks to MJ Allaire for sharing her bookish recommendations.
