Nobody does the holidays better than Sonoma County wineries. Loaded up with award winning varietals paired with artisan food and bread, wineries in Sonoma County top the list on “favorite things to do” during the holiday season. Whether its touring a wine cave or just sipping on a robust Merlot, Sonoma County is the perfect backdrop for holiday events. Sonoma County, approximately one hour away from San Francisco, will suit your style with gifts, food and of course, wine while presenting festive entertainment and tons of hospitality along the way.
Here’s what’s going on:
- “The Pies the Limit” takes place on November 17, 2012 and brings to the table yummy tastings of the season’s favorite pies–pumpkin or pecan, to name a few paired with side tastings of award winning ports, created, blended and bottled, using hand selected local grapes from the region. Sip and contemplate your favorite port and then go back for more. Award winning Deco, a delightful port with hints of scrumptious chocolate will make its appearance along with Duet, a local blended sherry with a smudge of hazelnut. Getting into the event is complimentary. Sonoma Valley Portworks is located in the old Foundry Wharf building downtown Petaluma at 613 Second Street.
- Holiday Trunk Show and Port Tasting, also located at Sonoma Valley Port Works provides a shopping experience you don’t want to miss. On December 6, 2012, taste your favorite port and shop for hand-crafted jewelry and local silks. Natural Touch beads and collectibles will be on hand highlighting their crafted jewelry plus silk scarves from West County Country Silks will be on display for purchase. This is a free event and one that can’t be missed.
The 29th Annual Holiday Open House is brought to you by the Heart of Sonoma Valley Association. Enjoy 2 days, November 23rd and 24th, of wine tasting, gift packages and winery tours. Hop in the car and make your way to 27 wineries of the region enjoying award winning varietals, artisan refreshments and festive entertainment. Each winery puts out their best whether it be hand-crafted cheeses, artisan bread or delightful gift creations. Guests will be serenaded by carolers at a few of the wineries or offered to take a wine tour through a cave. Holiday cheer is waiting so don’t miss the chance to experience life the way it should be.
Don’t miss Gloria Ferrer’s Catalan inspired Holiday Luncheon on December 9th, 2012. Hours are from 1:00PM-4:00PM and are initiated with tapas served in the sparkling wine caves, created by Chef Chris Dressick of Station, 596 Pacific Avenue in San Francisco.
Lunch includes dishes such as Cordero a la Brasa (braised lamb with onions and rosemary) or salt cod with local tomatoes. A private wine tour is set to begin after the tapa reception then onto lunch from 1:30-4:00PM. Sol Flamenco will be entertaining guests as well.
McEnvoy Ranch will host their Holiday Open House December 9th at 11 AM. This is your chance to tour the scenic ranch everyone knows and loves for their prized olive oil. The 550 acre ranch includes 18,000 olive trees of Tuscan varietals. There is plenty going on at the ranch:
- Holiday shopping including the 2012 Olio Nuovo, marmalades with names to die for- (Pink Pearl Apple or Apple Lavender Jelly), all organic and GMO-free pectin is used.
- Holiday Food Drive will be happening so bring non-perishable food to donate.
Sonoma County provides visitors loads of holiday cheer throughout the region. It is a “must-go” location for holiday events.
