Chinese food, while delicious, is typically not that healthy. The majority of items are fried and then sauced with salty soy sauce. Many places still use MSG as a flavor enhancer. One of the exceptions to this rule is Fortune Cookies. The menus at both Orange County locations are primarily the same, with the exception that the newer, larger Fountain Valley location has a sushi bar. Fortune Cookies sets themselves apart from other Chinese places by emphasizing the “healthy” aspect. Trans-fat-free oils, low sodium soy sauce, reduced fat condiments, sugar substitutes to help with calories and carbohydrates, gluten-free dishes are but some of the ways they make a healthier dish that still tastes excellent. In addition, they make abundant use of fresh vegetables as well as lean meats and poultry. No MSG is used in any dishes they cook. Finally, they are very willing to make dishes special ways to accommodate dietary and allergic requests. There is even a section in the menu that lists calorie counts, which dishes are gluten-free and which dishes can be made to suit people with high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. Fortune Cookies wants to keep their customers healthy so they can return for more delicious Chinese food. They also have an abundance of vegetarian dishes made with fresh vegetables.
The Veggie Lettuce Cup is an excellent appetizer. Very simple, it consists of minced tofu, chopped vegetables rolled into a lettuce leaf cup and served with a mildly spicy sauce. Some japanese influenced dishes also work into the mix such as a Spicy Tuna Salad and House Sashimi Salad, so Fortune Cookies can be considered more Pan-Asian rather than strictly a chinese restaurant. Cold Sake even makes a nice accompaniment as one of the beverages on the menu.
For main dishes, one good choice is the Crispy Orange Chicken. Unlike most places, the crispy battering is very light to complement the chicken rather than overpower it.Mixed into an Orange Peel House Sauce with scallions and chili peppers, it makes a tasty dish. Fortune Cookies tends to keep their sauces on the mild side so you might want to request spicier if you like it that way.
A delicious way to have shrimp is in the Honey Glazed Walnut shrimp. The large, plump shrimp are lightly battered and then coated with a low fat mayonnaise sauce, agin keeping with the healthy aspect compared to what many other places might use. The walnuts are glazed. Adding not only a crispy but slightly sweet contrast, the crunchiness of the walnuts playing against the tender shrimp. Fresh slices of carrot garnish the dish for yet another flavor contrast.
Fortune Cookies also includes, in addition to the aforementioned Japanese dishes, some Thai and Vietnamese-based dishes. The sushi bar at the Fountain Valley location has a full sushi bar with a wide variety of rolls. Fortune Cookies gives a lot to Orange County——a fun, modern place with healthy food that caters to the person who enjoys Chinese food but cannot eat at the usual Chinese restaurant. It also gives a good option to take people who are not that familiar with Chinese food—there are no unusual dishes, more just the basics catering to an Americanized palate. What they do however, they do very well. It is a great place to take a group who wants to expand their culinary horizons and do it in a healthy, tasty way.
