Mayor of Newark New Jersey, Cory Booker, has decided to take up a challenge proposed to him by a Twitter follower to go on food stamps for a week. This means the Mayor will try really hard to eat less than $33 worth of food for seven days.
The mayor will undoubtedly come away from the experience claiming that, gee, that was soooo difficult to do. Suffice it to say that with enough diligence in his purchasing choices he could pull this feat off but isn’t it a bit odious to look at the task as though it were otherworldly? Is it that hard to imagine what results would occur that the Mayor has to experience it first hand? This is Liberal condescending of the highest order.
And it is also part of our golden era of Liberalism. We get to view features of the entitlement state like a carnival ride because cities such as Newark have become one big welfare amusement park. Mr. Booker will not come off his food stamp ride with the impression that it ought to be dismantled so that no one should need to experience it again but will claim that something ought to be done to make it more fun.
The tragedy is that our Liberal caretakers (wait a minute, careGIVERS) are detached from the real sorrows of the inner-city, hence the challenge. Certainly the welfare spigot cannot be instantly shut off, but the whole entitlement culture has to be rethought. What ails places like Newark is that the entitlement state keeps people in the conditions they are in generation after generation and it is growing in numbers. It is the preferred option, not a safety net.
How is it that a low level job can provide rent, food, medical and legal expenses in an instant? Why struggle up the economic ladder when it isn’t necessary. Neighbors and friends in the entitlement state have been doing it for years. It is part of the culture. What needs to be looked at more closely is just how far gone enclaves such as Newark have deteriorated as a civil and safe society as a result. Liberal governess is blindly destroying the people they are trying to help all in the name of compassion. All one must do in order to “succeed” is to make all the wrong choices, what used to be considered “wrong” is now redefined. Right is now wrong, failure is success and the criminal is the victim.
But Cory Booker is going on food stamps for a week because he wants to see what it’s like. Can there be a greater demonstration of Liberal elitism? Will he announce that he resorted to eating hamburgers instead of steak? I really can’t wait for his insight after it is all done.
