On Tuesday, December 4, the largest indoor venue in Northeastern Maryland—APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College opens officially in Bel Air.
The new facility, under construction since groundbreaking in August 2011, provides 19,000 square feet of open space that will be used for sporting events for three of the College’s teams (men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball) in addition to community and regional events, commencements, concerts, special events, fundraising activities, meetings, conferences and trade shows.
Earlier this year Harford Community College announced that APG Federal Credit Union partnered with the College for the Arena naming rights for a period of 15 years. The financial support will fund scholarships for Harford Community College students as well as operations and programming in the Arena.
“The Arena is something I’m asked about frequently when I meet people in the community,” Dr. Dennis Golladay, president of Harford Community College, explained.
“While the Arena is a terrific benefit to our students, it is also eagerly anticipated by the greater community. They are looking forward to the basketball and volleyball games but also to attending concerts and special events, particularly high school graduations that now don’t have to be moved out of Harford County.”
The Arena is located adjacent to the newly renovated Susquehanna Center. The original Susquehanna Center opened in 1968 and was renovated over the past year during the Arena addition project.
The Susquehanna Center has doubled in size to provide increased opportunities for fitness as well as health and physical education classes. Renovation highlights include an expanded, state-of-the-art fitness center, dance studio, modernized swimming pool, multipurpose gymnasium, up-to-date learning technologies throughout plus an additional 50,000 square feet of space for instruction, meetings and community use.
“Having this new state of the art Arena is a great addition to the community. It will provide not only a benefit to Harford County but also the surrounding areas bringing in additional revenue and visitors,” Bill Parris, owner of WAMD 970AM in Harford County, said.
In keeping with the College’s sustainability initiatives, “green” practices were used whenever possible in the building and renovation process. For example, more than 40,000 cubic yards of soil were moved from the renovation site to the College’s practice fields. If the dirt had been hauled off campus, it would have equated to more than 2,000 vehicles traveling long distances for disposal in dump trucks, not generally known as clean-air vehicles. Relocating the dirt to the practice fields helped decrease vehicle emissions on the roads of Harford County and provided the College with more “even” playing fields.
