When Bridget moves in with her grandmother, Sylvia, the summer before law school she discovers her Nana has a naughty little secret. Sylvia runs an illegal lingerie shop for the over sixty set out of her rent-controlled apartment. She has to keep it from her snooping landlord and a new beat cop who’s smitten with her granddaughter or be stripped of everything. That’s the premise for Marathon Community Theatre’s first main stage production of the 2012/13 theatre season, Nana’s Naughty’ Knickers. It’s a comedy by playwright Katherine DiSavino playing weekends through Saturday, Dec. 15 at the local playhouse located at 5101 Overseas Highway, Oceanside in Marathon.
Barb Gilreath plays the sassy Sylvia. She was last seen on the local stage as Queen Aggravain in Once Upon a Mattress. MCT newcomer Sharon Caba plays her granddaughter, Bridget. Sharon, who hasn’t acted since high school, was encouraged to audition by her friend Jennifer Mixon-Eick, who is the show’s assistant director. “My son keeps making fun of me for making funny faces,” she said about practicing for her role. She is having a great time getting to know her cast and crew. “It’s like finding a new family.”
Devin Clarke, who has been part of the MCT family since he was in Fiddler on the Roof in 1998, plays rookie cop Tom O’Grady, a man who takes his job seriously. Christine Harrison made her debut with MCT as Vernadette in last season’s hit The Dixie Swim Club. She returns this season as Vera Walters, Sylvia’s hearing impaired best friend and accomplice. And, veteran MCT player Fred Hundhammer is the “villainous” landlord Gil Schmidt who is anxious to evict Sylvia so he can finally make more money.
Another newcomer to the Middle Keys stage is Cindy Berlin who is playing a small role on stage and helping behind the scenes of a very complicated set. She’s been coming to MCT shows with a group of friends for years and always wondered what went on behind the scenes to make it all work. She took a leap of faith and auditioned with the local theatre in October. “And now I’m really learning how MCT members make magic on the stage with every show and having a wonderful time doing it,” she said of her experience.
Rounding out the local cast is Kristeen Teague as Sylvia’s sexy but not too bright employee Heather Van Pree. Kris has been active in theatre for many years and worked in childrens’ theatre before moving to the Keys. She directed MCT’s youth theatre workshop this past summer. She’s enjoying the opportunity to play a sexy scamp and will showcase her acting range this season when she also plays a nun in the MCT production of The Sound of Music set for March 2013.
Alicia Merel, known for directing last season’s Dixie Club, directs MCT’s production of Nana’s Naughty Knickers. She teamed up with assistant director Jennifer Mixon-Eick who is learning the production process as part of the MCT Directing Experience. Claudia McEwen is the producer. “It’s a funny show with plenty of laughs,” McEwen said. “Everyone will enjoy it.”
Running in conjunction with Nana’s Naughty Knickers is a new art and photography exhibit in the MCT Gallery by Florida Keys artists Michelle Nicole Lowe and Paul Marcellini.
Tickets are $18. For tickets and information, stop by the Playhouse Box Office at MM 49.5, oceanside or call 305-743-0994.
