The design of this product is what I like to consider “genius”. By genius, I mean that GrimmSpeed took notice of a design flaw that engineering giants like Mitsubishi, Saab, and Fuji Heavy missed and made an easily installed product to improve performance and safety. Impressive build qualities such as indestructible 12L14 CNC laser cut construction, multi-point welding, and black powder coating make GrimmSpeed’s master cylinder braces as strong as they are innovative.
What does it do?
When you apply force to the brake pedal, that brake pedal is mounted to your firewall. The firewall is no longer consider a structural member of the vehicle and is typically made of very weak, flexible steel. To test your firewall, go outside to your vehicle with a friend and have him stand on the brake pedal. Watch your master brake cylinder inside of the engine bay; 99% chance it is going to flex like a wet noodle. That energy which is lost to the flex of the firewall can be applied to the hydraulic brake system if captured; which is exactly what the GrimmSpeed master cylinder brace accomplishes.
Why do you need it?
There’s many reasons why you need this part, but safety should be your first concern. When braking under emergency situations, ever second counts. If the energy you apply to your brake pedal is dissipated into flexing the firewall instead of applying your brakes, you aren’t stopping as quickly as you could be. This applies to both the race track and the public road; you never know what is going to jump out in front of you and when it happens it is nice to be prepared.
Installing the GrimmSpeed Master Cylinder Brace is easier and quicker than you think. For most vehicles, you take off the strut tower brace, install the master cylinder brace, and you’re almost done. Reinstall the strut tower brace, set the anodized master cylinder brace peg up against your master cylinder, and adjust it accordingly. It took me a total of 14 minutes and 47 seconds to install mine with basic tools in my driveway. I barely broke a sweat!
If you are like me, you are very tuned into your vehicle. Before I even left the driveway, I could tell a huge difference in how the brake system felt of my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. I did a few tests in the driveway, and even stood on the brake pedal; sure enough, GrimmSpeed’s Master Cylinder Brace made a huge change in the amount of pedal play. When cornering, the improved response will allow for a more precise control of the braking system. During abrupt emergency stops, the system allows you to apply full braking pressure to the hydraulic system which maximizes OEM stopping power.
It was a huge change in my vehicle’s braking capability and I couldn’t be happier. For right around $100, I say this is one of the best bang for buck mods to the braking system out there. I couldn’t be happier! The product is made well, shipped quickly, and GrimmSpeed is known for excellent customer service which is something I admire. It is one thing to ship somebody parts, but to be there for them in the long run with prompt communication is what sets them apart. Ask anybody you know in the tuner world, and if they’ve heard of GrimmSpeed, I’m sure they have good things to say about them!
