While there are many more options today for those gluten-free, if you haven’t prepared for Thanksgiving, then you might want to hurry to Dee’s One Smart Cookie.
A gluten-free bakery in Glastonbury, CT, Dee’s products are all dairy-free, soy-free and peanut-free. Not only that, ingredients are organic or all natural, free of preservatives and artificial colors with options for those egg-free, yeast-free and tree-nut free.
Hurry over by Wednesday for individual desserts suited for Thanksgiving. (It’s too late for pie orders, but there are still many other choices). All of her desserts are nice, light desserts. They leave you satisfied, not craving more from extra artificial sweetness.
Pumpkin spice coffeecake is a drier coffeecake with not a lot of pumpkin or spice for a nice blend. This is definitely for people who aren’t crazy about pumpkin with just a little sweetness on top.
Small, round gingerbread cakes are just plain awesome, and are just like eating gingerbread cookies. There is a distinct taste that could be molasses, but is just right and not too strong.
Dee has a cranberry compote that is like an upside down cake. A nice, light orange taste and tasty cranberries come together. Try this even if you are not likely to be invited by this type of dessert. It was surprisingly fluffy and not overcome by cranberries, even for someone who is not a big cranberry fan.
For those wishing to serve pumpkin pie, her pumpkin spice bars are just like the pie in serveable portions. With a light crust, and a good pumpkin taste, it has just the right amount of spice. From 1 to 5, these bars would be rated over a 5 from any other pumpkin pie. For those looking for sweeter desserts, then this falls somewhere in the middle.
For sweeter desserts, her cupcakes and lemon bars are of the sweeter variety. Below are some of the choices for Thanksgiving, but remember, none of the desserts have that sugary sweet stuff that you gobble down. Dee’s stuff is to be savored, not rushed; tasted mindfully so that you can appreciate the flavor and effort put into it.
Pumpkin Maple Cupcakes are just a nice, satisfying muffin with a touch of maple in the frosting.
The spiced pound cake has just a touch of sweetness on the top. It is soft, and easy to go back for a second serving.
The pumpkin spice cupcake is fruity and light, but it might be hard to put your finger on just what it is. It is not as sweet as the other cupcakes, and light to eat. It is best when eaten with the frosting for the perfect blend.
A carrot cupcake doesn’t offer the same typical carrot taste, so those who might enjoy the typical carrot cake might want to try some of the pumpkin desserts instead. It was a bit more solid with a touch of spice.
Snickerdoodles are offered throughout the holiday season. They have a nice cinnamon taste, hard with a softer inside. They are almost buttery, which is pretty good considering there are no dairy ingredients. These would be the perfect cookie to serve for the holidays.
Her products can change, but there are a few staples. Whoopie pie is chocolatey and perfect, just like any gluten-filled countpart. The chocolate mousse bars sell quickly, but are not necessarily for those that are used to your typical cup-sized serving. They are very smooth, but do not have the typical chocolate mousse taste so they might not appeal to some. The chocolate on top is delicious! Now if you want a sweet dessert, one of the sweetest is the lemon bar. Again, these would also be for someone who would not normally try something such as this. It had a sweet, nice crust, and was very hard to stop eating!
Pricing is only slightly higher than top-notch bakeries. Given gluten-free itself is so pricey this should be noted. Pricing compared to the frozen counterparts is also similar. The very popular oatmeal bread is $10.99 for a loaf, but even boxed mixes to do yourself cannot be purchased for under $4 and do not make as much.
Check Dee’s One Smart Cookie out into the upcoming holidays. She regularly offers dinner rolls, and offers stuffing mix for the holidays. For cakes, be prepared order a week ahead of time. For pies, be prepared to order about two weeks ahead of time. The shop is located at 398 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury, CT. Entering her fifth year in business, Dee is still one-of-a-kind.
