Just when the public thinks no more people can possibly be involved in the growing soap opera that has evolved from the General David Petraeus scandal, a new figure enters the drama……attorney Gloria Allred.
Allred held a press conference yesterday in which she announced she was representing Natalie Khawam, twin sister of Jill Kelley who received alleged threatening e-mails from Paula Broadwell who was having an affair with General Petraeus who was friends with Jill Kelley. And one could go on and on with the growing cast of characters including FBI agent Frederick Humphries II who sent a topless photograph of himself to Jill Kelly who received 3,000 pages of “flirtatious” e-mails from General John Allen, who is leading our troops in Afghanistan and nominated to head NATO.
One observation frequently made during this growing drama is that General Allen must have a lot of free time on his hands to be sending thousands of pages of e-mails to socialite Jill Kelley while conducting a war. He must be an exremely competent leader to have the ability to compose e-mails to the Tampa socialite at the same time he is planning strategy to win the war in Afghanistan.
Back to the latest developments at the news conference on Tuesday, Khawan said her sister Jill Kelley was a kind, generous persons and her “best friend,” according to the HuffPost Politics article today.
Khawan became a player in this romantic comedy scenario when it came to light that both Generals Petraeus and John Allen composed letters to the judge overseeing her custody trial in which they extolled the virtues of Ms. Khawam as a mother. It’s a relief to many Americans to know that these two busy generals not only have time to send e-mails to their friends, but also to compose letters advising a judge in a custody dispute as to which side should prevail.
The inescapable conclusion is that it doesn’t require much focus to run a war in this day and age.
Allred explained during yesterday’s news conference that Petraeus and his wife, Holly, were longtime family friends of the twin sisters.
The celebrity attorney also explained, “They have loved Natalie’s child and emotionally supported her and her son through the toughest times in Natalie and her son’s life.”
The press conference was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Allred, who has a list of famous clients longer than the state of Tennessee, first emerged on the national scene as a lawyer during the O.J. Simpson trial as counsel for one of the parties involved in a custody dispute over the children in that case.
She has long been a fighter for women’s rights in courtrooms across the country.
High-powered attorney Allred further said,”Khawam will continue to love and support Jill for doing the right thing.”
Her client Khawam said, “I look forward to the day when I’m able to answer everyone’s questions and explain what really happened in this matter.”
She did not take questions.
Petraeus resigned as the head of CIA on November 9, admitting he had an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell.
The tragedy of this whole situation is that families have been damaged by the unnecessary public humiliation which has been visited upon them by a news media which has run amok with this story. If David Petraeus was an accountant working for Merrill Lynch there wouldn’t be a story here.
Gloria Allred is correct in stating that some of the women in this case have been unfairly victimized.
