There is a very simple fact about global warming; on average if you are a Democrat you believe it is happening and if you are a Republican, you don’t.
And before I go on, let me say that I am writing this as an environmentalist and not as a Democrat or Republican. What I am putting down here is my opinion when it comes to anything but the scientific data and when it comes to the data, it is fact, not fiction like some would like you to believe.
On a recent airing of the ABC News program Nightline, the host said very plainly that global warming is real and presented a very convincing piece called ‘Chasing Ice’: Time-Lapse Cameras Capture Rapidly Melting Glaciers
President Obama said that the planet is warming and that climate change is happening.
Scientists across the world have said this is fact and that the implications on human kind could be major and who knows what we are ultimately doing to the rest of the life on our planet.
But in the United States it all seems to come down to politics and if for no other reason, this is one of the reasons why I am glad that President Obama was reelected. He is not blind to the problem, regardless of whether you call it global warming or climate change. The president understands that it is happening and knows that something must be done. Odds are that Mr. Romney would not have been as receptive to dealing with the problem, but it is hard to tell since global warming never really came up it the campaign.
So now to some of the numbers.
According to a poll taken earlier this year by the Gallup Organization, 67 percent of Republicans say global warming is exaggerated while only 20 percent of the Democrats believe it is and as would be expected, Independents are right about in the middle at 42 Percent.
Now let’s add to this that only 40 percent of Republicans believe that the effects of global warming “have already begun to happen”, while it is 65 percent for the Democrats and once again the good old Independents come in right at 50 percent.
I would think that 100 percent of the people who withstood Hurricane Sandy would say global warming or climate change or whatever you want to call it was possibly at work with the monster storm. After all a few years back scientists were saying that the storms would be getting worse, but hey they are scientists and who can believe them, right? Well that is what apparently a large majority of Republicans and Independents would say.
But forget about political parties for a moment and let’s look at one small piece of evidence that amazingly some people will ignore. But odds are these are the same people who think we didn’t land on the moon and that somehow the earth is flat.
According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, better known as NOAA, this past October was the 36th October and the 332nd month in a row with a global temperature above the average temperature for the 20th century.
So in other words, the globe is warming.
Where it really gets weird for me is when the poll takers asked people what they think is causing global warming. For some of the group, it was like a parent asking a child who tracked mud into the house; not me they say and in this case some of us humans are saying “not me” for polluting the world. By the way, the house we are dealing with here is the planet and until we all admit we dirtied up the place, nothing will get done.
According to the poll, only 36 percent of Republicans believe that human activities are the main cause of global warming while 65 percent of Democrats believe that human kind is at fault.
But here is my point and it goes directly to the belief by some that human kind is not causing the problem by polluting the planet.
For these people I have a very simple question. Are you nuts, blind or just afraid to say human kind is at fault because then you have to take part of the blame?
Just look at the air in our cities, sure it is better than in the 1950’s but it is still dirty and polluted. Who in their right mind would continue to pour hundreds of millions of tons of poisons into the very air they breathe? Human kind, that’s who.
And then there is the water and the equally disgusting way we are poisoning it and the land where we dump all kinds of toxins.
Our planet is where we live, it is the only home we have ever had and the only home we may ever have. When what we do causes animals to die, do you really think that we are so far from the grave ourselves?
Only by waking up and forgetting all the petty political fighting will we actually get somewhere and if nothing else human kind should be reducing pollution for our own well being.
And one other point, there are some who will say that God will come down and fix the world. After all they say that God created the world and he will fix it. Has it ever occurred to these “believers” that God may be really mad at human kind for what it has done to His creation and decide to start all over?
Face it, when we kill off this planet we have killed ourselves as surely as if we would have put our head into a smoke stack or into a tank full of the poisons we put into our world.
Right now it seems that a large portion of Americans are doing just that by putting their heads into the sand and ignoring the truth.
