‘Tis the season for change! As the hustle and bustle of the holiday subsides and we segue into a new year, transformation is on the horizon. We needn’t spend mad cash, however, to bring a total kitchen transformation. Consider this “Savvy 3 Layer Agenda” as your kitchen Botox! Unlike our resolutions to tighten our tummies and expand our savings, let’s put this kitchen update plan into effect- STAT!
If you have done your fair share of entertaining, as I have, this holiday, then your kitchen could use a date with Mr. Clean. The first step to any décor update is a good old fashion scrubbing. We surface clean daily, like wiping crumbs off of counters and a quick trip around the room with the Swiffer, but when was the last time you applied some elbow grease to your routine? Clear all surfaces of everything, including small appliances, and really scrub them well. Wash all appliances, large and small, with an anti-bacterial, de-greasing solution. Next, clean your floor, and I mean a serious hands and knees undertaking. Our kitchens have been in operation overload and this is the perfect time to make them shine!
Once that awful task is complete, the next layer to our quick kitchen face-lift is to swap out, or add a new finish. I like to think of the cabinet knobs and pulls as the jewelry of the kitchen. You should never walk out the door without your jewelry and your kitchen should not be deprived of its chance to shine either! Choose something unexpected. Don’t feel married to the existing finish, shape or size. Going from a chrome or nickel finish to an oil rubbed bronze can make a huge difference in the whole look of your existing cabinetry.
Once you have chosen your new hardware, select both a new faucet and light fixture in the same finish. Warm deeper tones like copper and bronze, are making a welcome cameo in lieu of the myriad of silver finishes that have dominated the market as of late. Speaking of silver finishes, have dreams of stainless steel appliances danced in your heads? Have these same dreams been squashed by realities of monetary limitations? Deprive your self no longer! Alsa Corp, the world’s leading manufacturer of custom paints and finishes, offers a simple solution to your boring appliance quandaries. Turn any surface into an expensive custom looking finish with a simple peel and stick application sold by the roll, called FX Sheeting. This product comes in a plethora of finishes from stainless steel, brushed aluminum and copper to many more exotic options like burl wood, mother of pearl and tortoise shell. Keep in mind this Savvy Rule of Thumb, however, when it comes to wrapping certain appliances- If it’s too hot to touch, then it’s too hot to wrap!
The final layer of your new kitchen will be to replace, or add, the fabric elements. This includes window treatments, area rugs and linens, like table clothes and towels. Select a pattern and color scheme that is completely different from your existing items. If you currently only have a blind or other hard treatment on your windows, replace it with a fabric shade or add a fabric valance. In a room lacking the softness of upholstery like a kitchen or a dining room, small fabric additions like a window valance or an area rug can make a huge impact on the total outcome of the space.
With this 3 layer kitchen face-lift plan, your very own Savvy kitchen is just a weekend away!
