Before shopping online or buying gifts in a big box store, it is better to make an attempt to shop in locally owned stores for the same kinds of gifts.

If you must buy from a chain store, places like the Crate and Barrel and Target do sell green products. and if you look carefully you may even find made in the USA items. The Carnegie Mellon Green Design Institute reports that buying online reduces energy consumption, with about 30 percent less carbon dioxide emissions than at retailers, especially if the online purchases are shipped via ground and not air. As more shippers use hybrid and electric vehicles, the savings will be even higher since most shoppers have gas only cars. About 65 percent of the energy used in traditional shopping is from driving to stores and shippers route more efficient deliveries. Additional packaging for mailing offsets a small part of that energy. But shopping locally provides jobs and supports your community financially.
