New Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate the incoming year and remember the events that took place the previous year. With that celebration often comes adult beverages and champagne toasts, which could lead to someone getting behind the wheel of a vehicle in an impaired state. In fact, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), New Year’s Eve is the holiday with the second highest incidence of drunk driving arrests and crashes, second only to Thanksgiving. For those who want to celebrate with friends and family, here are a few designated driver services available at Delaware beach resorts on New Year’s Eve.
The Black Pearl
The Black Pearl offers pick up and delivery service in the Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach and Ocean City, Maryland area. The vehicle, painted like a pirate ship, complete with a mast, travels throughout the beach area, transporting partiers at no cost. The inside of the ship, with it’s authentic boardwalk and beach décor, makes the ride even more unique. For more information, call 302-569-2273. Be aware that the Black Pearl captain expects New Year’s Eve to be a busy night, so be patient as he picks up all his riders!
Mike Lutz and Rich Harpel offer Chase Car as an alternative to drinking and driving. For those who attend a celebration and realize later in the evening that they have had too much to drink, they simply call Chase Car at 302-258-3464. Two drivers are dispatched, one to drive the customer’s vehicle home and one to drive the intoxicated driver. Prices range from $10 to $40 depending on where they need to transport the vehicle and driver. The service is limited to the Rehoboth-Dewey-Lewes-North Bethany area, however.
AAA Tipsy Tow
Despite a popular Facebook post that made the rounds around the New Year’s holiday in both 2011 and 2012, the AAA Tipsy Tow is not a nationwide service. In fact, the program is only offered in a certain areas throughout the country. Unfortunately, there are no AAA Tipsy Tow programs available in the Delaware beach area.
Many Delaware beach resorts have a wide selection of taxi services available as well, which are a viable option if you are going to remain in the beach area. However, if you live in towns away from Delaware beaches, such is Milford or Georgetown, taxi costs are expensive, as much as $75 one way. If you plan to visit Delaware beach resorts from those towns, choose a designated driver, or plan to stay overnight in one of the many hotels available at the beach. This will insure that everyone arrives from their celebration safely in order to enjoy the upcoming year.
