In a shocking surprise and in the crappy news department, Gail Simone has been taken off as writer of Batgirl. Henry Barajas will take over as of Issue 17 next year.
Gail Simone had been writing Batgirl since issue one of The New 52 in September 2011. Gail was also the former writer of Birds of Prey before the inception of the New 52 and wrote the character of Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Oracle for that DC Universe.
Gail Simone’s Twitter response from today 12/9 which made it official:
“This is my Yes-the-news-is-true-and-it-sucks super sad dance. Oddly,
it’s square dancing.
On Wednesday of last week, new Batgirl editor Brian Cunningham
informed me by email that I was no longer the writer of Batgirl.
But I want to give huge, huge thanks to the other creators in the
bat-offices, and editors Bobbie Chase and @yourpallsmitty, champions
And the biggest thank you of all to you guys for supporting this book
so hugely and making it a commercial and critical success.
I honestly don’t have the words right now to thank you all. I’m pretty
choked up and it’s all gratitude, not bitterness.
I am very proud of what we accomplished with Batgirl and it was an
honor to get to write Barbara Gordon again. Love that dame.”
Fans have responded in droves on twitter and facebook wishing the famed author all the best in future endeavors. Gail is one of my favorite writers as stated in my review of Batgirl issue one linked here: http://rootshed.com/review/batgirl-1-review-the-new-52
Let’s do the math now shall we. I see no reason for Simone to be taken off as the series has had solid sales since issue one. Issue Zero sold 50,441 copies in September and increased sales 15.2% Batgirl issue 13 was # 36 in the top 300 comics for October and Wonder Woman was #44. Batgirl was in the top 50 and there was no female heroes ahead of her so she was top of the class. And the 6 month comparison chart revealed Batgirl currently in the Top 8 for DC’s comics with an increase of 2.5%. Big mistake DC. Gail’s track record speaks for itself and you just lost one of the best writers and especially one who knows this character and many other DC characters all too well. You guys would be wise to assign her another book pronto!
Thank you Gail. We are very proud of what you’ve accomplished with Batgirl and all the characters you have written for in the past. Here’s looking forward to reading your final issues of Batgirl and a story you wrote in the soon to be Time Warp anthology from Vertigo.
Please be sure to check out Gail’s kickstarter project named LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS, which has reached its funding goal.
