FOX411 announced on Dec. 28 that it has chosen its celebrity of the year, swimsuit model Kate Upton. They rightly figured that someone who violated You Tub’e anti-nudity policy by dancing with her clothes on had to be somebody special.
That You Tube incident relating to her video “Cat Daddy” was fixed the next day when You Tube put the video back up saying it made a “bad call.” This one incident, though, did more for Kate Upton than a whole year of good contracts. “Cat Daddy” propelled Upton into a whirlwind of a year which included a Sports Illustrated cover, a GQ cover and not one but two Vogue covers..
Kate Upton’s year began in January when the bikini model slam dunked a viral video hit called “Doing the Dougie” with friends at a Los Angeles Clippers game. She has a great laugh, looks good and looks like she’s fun. That was all it took.
“I’ve been modeling for almost five years now, and so being shy kind of went out the door a while ago,” Upton told FOX411 in an exclusive interview then. “I’m very confident in my body.”
When more Kate Upton dance moves were requested by an ever-growing fan base, she obliged by busting some new moves during the 2012 Sport Illustrated Swimsuit Edition shoot in Australia. The photos went viral and got her the coveted swimsuit edition cover.
Next came a big bite out of a Southwest Patty Melt while sitting on top of a black convertible in a TV ad for Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s. This shot Kate Upton into the ranks of stars like Kim Kardashian, Padma Lakshmi and Paris Hilton.
Of course, as you climb to the top, there are those who are ever ready and willing to shoot you down.
“We would never use her,” sniffed Victoria’s Secret casting director Sophia Neophitou. “She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”
Kate Upton was fine with that and let Victoria’s Secret know it.
“I’m doing fine in my career, I don’t need to walk down their runway so it’s all good. She can think that and I can think whatever I want about her.” Upton also noted, “Gisele (Bündchen)’s a football player’s wife. Gisele’s in that category so I’m good.”
When a blogger at skinnygirlgossip.com compared Kate Upton to a “well-marbled cow,” the voluptuous beauty had an answer ready.
“I’m not going to starve just to be thin,” retorted Upton. “I want to enjoy life and I can’t if I’m not eating and miserable.”
None of this seemed to even slow her down, though. In June, Kate Upton was seen on the cover of GQ’s July issue, along with a video by GQ, “The Many Talents of Kate Upton.”
The curvy little girl from Michigan, once thought too buxom to be a top model, then landed a campaign with Mercedes-Benz.
“People told me I couldn’t be fashion, that I’m just an old-fashioned body girl, only good for swimwear,” Upton declared. “But I knew that I could bring back the supermodel. What can I say? I’m relatable.”
Kate Upton is the sixth most searched for person in the U.S. on Google.
