Sometimes it’s difficult to get started or finish up the holiday shopping when both mom and dad work all week. On the weekends, the kids are home and you can’t exactly take them along when shopping for them and leaving them home just isn’t an option. Well, holiday shopping in Fortuna just got a little easier thanks to several Fortuna businesses and Fortuna Theater.
On Dec. 1 and Dec. 15, “The Grinch” starring Jim Carrey and “Puss in Boots” starring Antonio Banderas, will be shown at the Fortuna Theater for free to children 12 and under. Fortuna businesses will handing out hundreds of free movie passes for special children’s shows. More than 75 businesses in Fortuna will be handing out free movie passes to loyal customers this holiday season. The tickets admit children 12 and under and adults with young children for a special 10 a.m. show. This event is made possible by the City of Fortuna, the Fortuna Business Improvement District, the Fortuna Business Community and the 2012 sponsors. Not only do local businesses want to thank customers for shopping in their establishments, they also want to encourage patrons to take advantage of the opportunity to shop local while the kids are having some holiday fun of their own.
Organizers are asking that only one adult accompany young children and that families try to have groups of children come with one adult to allow more seats for kids. There will be several adult chaperones at each show and parents can drop children off and pick them up just before Noon.
Tickets must be obtained from a Fortuna business for these special shows. No tickets are available at the theater. The organizers also are reminding parents and grandparents this event is to encourage adults to finish holiday shopping in Fortuna while the kids are occupied with the movie.
On Dec. 1 the holiday movie “The Grinch” will be shown. This live action film starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch is based on the book and animated classic by Dr. Seuss. The film also includes Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who, Jeffrey Tambor as Mayor Augustus Maywho and Christine Baranski as Martha May Whovier. The film is directed by Ron Howard and is rated PG for some crude humor.
“Puss in Boots” will be shown on Dec. 15. This animated film takes a closer look at the Puss in Boots character made popular in the “Shrek” movies. Antonio Banderas once again lends his voice to the character of Puss and Salma Hayek is the voice of Kitty Softpaws. Zach Galifianakis is the voice of Humpty Dumpty, Billy Bob Thornton plays Jack and Amy Sedaris is Jill. This film is rated PG for some adventure action and mild rude humor.
