Judging from my experience of running a floral design school, there are so many people who want to learn flower arrangement but do not have sufficient time or cannot spare time during daytime or weekday for attending lessons. These people look for an instructor or school that can offer classes in the evening or weekend.
Also many students have possibilities that they are unable to take lessons consecutively. Namely once in a while the situation surrounding them cannot allow them to take lessons on a consecutive basis. They sometimes face unexpected event or appointment which does not allow them to attend a next scheduled lesson.
If a school can accept a flexible lesson schedule which is basically set up/established by each student considering his/her own convenience and private schedule, they must be very happy. Usually once a school establishes an annual class schedule and announces it publicly and students sign up for a certain course, school usually does not change such announced schedule , which is common among most schools and it is quite understandable.
Regarding the flexibility of lesson schedule, the key point is whether a school can accept a reschedule request from each student. Suppose a student is scheduled to take a next lesson on December 15th but the situation does not allow the student to attend the next scheduled class and want to postpone it to the week after next. In this kind of case, the student must be happy if he/she can make a request of rescheduling the next lesson.
Due to the fact that there are so many students, a school is usually unable to comply with a request from each student because it is obvious that a school cannot follow each student’s each request. The more students a school has, the more difficult it is for a school to comply with a request from each student.
The bottom line is small scale school or the school which offers a small group of class has less difficulties for working flexibly on the reschedule request from students (if the school management has a students friendly policy and has intention to do so).
The schools that are operated with semester system also have difficulties to work flexibly to comply with each student’s request. The more organized way a school operates, the more difficult it is to work flexibly in a sense. When students makes a decision for which school or instructor they should learn from, it may be studied where they should make a trade off between organized operation lacking flexibility AND less organized operation with flexible class schedule.
Fortunately (or unfortunately), I am running a small school that can offer a flexible class schedule. If the situation surrounding our students does not allow them to attend lessons on a consecutive basis, they can skip or temporarily stop taking lessons and resume attending classes after the situation has turned out favorably. As far as they complete a course within six (6) months counting from the initial lesson day of a course, students can work flexibly. Take the change of class schedule for instance, we can manage students rescheduling request as far as such request is made 7 days prior to the next scheduled lesson day. This can be implemented only because the class size is small limiting number of students to no more than six (6) per class or instructor and we do not operate based on semester system.
