In the past five years, the price of flowers were dramatically raised seemingly because of the unbelievable hike of gasoline price etc. As a flower arrangement instructor, this is one of the biggest headaches for running a floral business. If you buy flowers at a floral shop, you would like to make the best use of the valuable materials as long as possible by prolonging their life.
There are so many ways to enhance the longevity of cut flowers. And some methods work for some flowers but some ways do not work for some flowers. This means from flower to flower the way of handling is somewhat different. However what is explained below can apply for any and all kinds of cut flowers in order to keep them fresh as long as possible.
The easiest and most fundamental way is FRESH CUT, FRESH WATER and CLEAN CUT, CLEAN WATER.
- FRESH CUT, FRESH WATER: After you buy cut flowers at a florist or flower market, you bring them home to store. As cut flowers are still living they need to drink water. Before dipping in the water, you need to cut stems of flowers (better to cut them in the water). Cutting stems greatly helps make effective hydration. It is highly recommended to cut stems as frequently as possible. Water should be always fresh because dirty water grows bacteria and consequently it shortens the life of cut flowers
- CLEAN CUT, CLEAN WATER:When cutting stems of flowers before dipping in the water, you had better cut off leaves that are under water. Unnecessary leaves under water level easily get rotten and they cause the growth of bacteria which cannot keep water clean. Another meaning of CLEAN CUT is cutting stems of flowers with a sharp knife or scissors (knife works better). We recommend you to cut the stems in an angle (the sharp angle, the better) giving more surface to the stems, which allows them to take in more water than a straight cut. Another secret for prolonging the life of cut flowers is to keep water CLEAN. Needless to say it is better to change water frequently.
The methods introduced in the above are most primitive way but very effective. It is not only effective but also economical. You don’t need to use any artificial stuff as far as you follow these methods. It is simple, primitive, easy and economical, people have been depending on these traditional ways since long time ago when there was no artificial or chemical stuff like bleaches and flower preservatives etc.
