After hearing the monstrous news that an armed gunman strolled into a Connecticut Elementary school and open fire killing 20 children, the Country stands mute with trembling voices and are left with more questions than answers.
On Friday morning, December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother, Nancy Lanza in the face, killing her at their home in Newtown Connecticut. Then, in the nine o’clock hour, Lanza, went to the Sandy Hook Elementary School nearby and opened fire on two classrooms full of children, killing 20 of them.
New reports are still coming in but it’s believed that Lanza also shot and killed six adults at the school which included the Principle, Dawn Hochsprung and school Psychologist, Mary Sherlach. As police quickly responded to frantic 911 calls, evacuating the school and trying to get aid to the wounded was top priority.
As the true magnitude of the situation started to sink in, Detroiters began to sound off.
Upon hearing the news of the shooting, Tonya Williams of Westland, quickly got on-line trying to contact officials to give any kind of help to anyone who may have needed it. “I tell my child that there are some people who are just sick in their minds and when you don’t have God you’re flesh can do anything, it’s hard because my son is that age”, said the grief stricken mother of two.
Tammy of Detroit couldn’t hold back tears while picking up food for her children, who are the same age of the children who died in this horrific shooting. “I just don’t know how to feel about this, I have been crying since I heard but I just had to get out of the house, I’m just so sad, I can’t breathe right now!”
Mel Hughes of Detroit was pumping gas outside a station in Westland and the emotion was just too much for him to put in words while he sobbed almost uncontrollably after hearing the news on the radio. “My heart is heavy, my wife is pregnant, it’s our first baby, I just can’t get how you hurt little kids!”
Reports are that Lanza was dressed from head to toe in black military fatigues. Lanza used a Glock, Sig-Sauer and .223 caliber rifle during the shooting, leaving another caliber in a vehicle he used that was registered to his mother. Four weapons in total were recovered from the scene those weapons were also legally registered to his mother, Nancy Lanza. Adam Lanza, callously opened fire in at least two classrooms that kindergarden age students belonged.
During a recent briefing address from President Barack Obama, the emotional magnitude of this crime hit the commander and chief hard as he clearly struggled to give support to a nation. Fighting back tears and visibly taken by this tragedy, President Obama said, “We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in these past few years, and each time I receive the news I react not as a president, but as a parent.”
“I’m more sure now that the world is coming to a end as we know it, God is merciful and would never allow something like this to happen but we have to be in obedience with the Lord,” says Vince of Inkster.
As Connecticut police broke through the school trying to locate survivors and neutralize the threat to anyone, police found Adam Lanza, dead of an apparent gunshot, obviously, turning the gun on himself and ending his life.
The brother of the shooter, Ryan Lanza was questioned in Hoboken, N.J., unconfirmed reports have surfaced that Ryan told police his brother does have mental problems. It is not sure whether he will face any charges.
Word is that Lanza did not say a word while he pointed his gun towards the children and ended life for them and changed the lives of many in that community.
Officials said the shooter’s father, who is divorced from Lanza’s mother, lives in Stamford, Conn., and is now talking to FBI agents.
With just about 700 innocent children apart of the Sandy Hook Elementary School system, instead of getting ready for the long awaited Christmas holiday or re-playing roles in the holiday play or gearing up to visit family, funeral arrangements will be the focus. No one knows or can predict evil but we can stand firm that as a nation that we will not tolerate evil against the innocent.
Whether Christian or not, find some way to help mend the hearts of those touched by this tragedy by prayers, volunteering, sending donations or offering a shoulder for someone to cry on. Whatever manner we help, we feel pain the same way, with our hearts.
Connecticut Police are confident to have all children positively identified for the media by Saturday but does admit the concentrated investigation will go on through Sunday. In all 27 lives were lost today including the shooter, this will unarguable remain a devastating tragedy unfolding in this country and will surely stay on the minds of those touched by the evil works of a few.
President Obama ended his emotional speech with a quote from the Bible, the quote came from Psalm 147:3, “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
