On Nov. 16, Walt Disney World announced details for its Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, the annual spring festival that highlights the green beauty of Epcot.
Among the special elements for 2013 will be areas and topiaries related to Disney’s “Oz The Great and Powerful” and Disney-Pixar’s “Monsters Inc.”
As the event celebrates its 20th year, the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival (Epcot Flower & Garden for short) will offer a new interactive play area inspired by Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Oz” film for Disney.
Gusts will be able to immerse themselves in the world envisioned in “Oz The Great and Powerful,” the Disney Parks Blog revealed, with a circus-themed area with carnival games and photo opportunities.
The festival also will feature a “Land of Oz Play Area” for children, filled with giant flowers and the iconic crashed hot-air balloon, and an “Oz Movie Garden” that will offer lush and unusual plants inspired by the fantastical place.
The lush designs and rich colors of Disney’s “Oz” should be a good fit for the festival’s own elaborate use of flowers, topiaries and colors. The combination of the festival and movie might also have guests thinking about the Technicolor richness of 1939’s “Wizard of Oz” and of L. Frank Baum’s Emerald City. But “Oz” isn’t the only addition to the festival.
This year, Epcot Flower & Garden introduces food & drink marketplaces, much like the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, that allow guests to nosh, sip and stroll around the World.
For the first time, Epcot Flower & Garden will display Mike and Sully topiaries. The two “Monsters Inc.” characters will appear on the walkway from Future World to World Showcase.
Mike and Sully join other Disney-Pixar favorites that return to the event. The festival will offer a new “Cars” playground near Test Track Walkway. The location is perfect for the Radiator Springs theme, and will highlight the re-imaged Test Track attraction slated to open Dec. 6.
2013 also brings a change to the Butterfly House, which was been themed to “Bambi” last year. This year, it’s called Fawn’s Butterfly House and will feature Tinker Bell and her fairy friends, including Fawn (of course), Vidia and Terrence.
Naturally, Disney’s “Fab Five” will be among more than 100 topiaries at Epcot Flower and Garden. Guests will find Mickey Mouse, Minnie mouse, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck at the Epcot main entrance. There, the gang will enjoy a barbecue. Mickey tends to the grill, while a 14-foot-tall Goofy topiary tries to handle an anniversary cake.
These elements are some of the highlights of Epcot Flower & Garden, which is free with Epcot admission. Other aspects include the Flower Power Concert series on festival weekends, HGTV celebrity presentations, seminars and design tips for gardeners, and dozens and dozens of displays that dress up the them park in its best greenery.
Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival runs for 75 days during the spring, between March 6 and May 19, 2013.
