The Elmo puppeteer resigned Friday, according to Sesame Street. Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo quit amid a growing sex scandal that now includes a second accuser. The PBS show said the allegations became a distraction at the Sesame Workshop and Clash decided to move on.
After the scandal shocked the public last week about the swirling allegations, The Hollywood Reporter shared the breaking news of Clash’s departure in its Nov. 20 report.
Tuesday morning, Sesame Street released a statement with the details about Clash’s resignation after 28-years of being the voice of Elmo.
“Sesame Workshop’s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential. Kevin Clash has helped us achieve that mission for 28 years, and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.”
Kevin Clash denied the sex scandal with the then underage boy from the beginning of the internal investigation from Sesame Street.
The Elmo puppeteer resigned, but has been open about being a gay man. From the start, he admitted having a same-sex relationship with the accuser. However, Clash said their relationship was consensual and only began when the man was an adult.
Days ago, Clash’s first accuser, now identified as Sheldon Stephens (pictured here), reportedly recanted his story about the underage sex scandal.
However, there are different versions of this story. Contact Music wrote that Stephens settled the personal matter for an undisclosed amount of money with the understanding that he would change his story to say the relationship with Clash was consensual between two adults.
TMZ later wrote that the man was paid the sum of $125,000 to settle the case, but was under a lot of pressure to end his claim. Yea, it’s all a mess.
And if the Elmo sex scandal is not enough with Clash and Stephens, allegedly another man has come forward and is suing for $5 million along the same lines.
Should the Elmo puppeteer have resigned if the first matter was allegedly recanted and settled privately?
