Celebrity dancers during week 9 of “Dancing With the Stars: All Stars” gave viewers quite a show, with the judges awarding three perfect scores on Monday, Nov. 19. With fan votes still to be factored in, all five remaining couples are still in the running, but two will be eliminated on Tuesday.
The couples performed two dances on Monday, the first being a dance with a fun — but oddly matched — theme thrown in. The judges scored the first round of competition as follows:
Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough/Bhagra Knight Rider: 30
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani/Caveman Hustle: 27.5
Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff/Big Top Jazz: 27
Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy/Surfer Flamenco: 25.5
Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke/Espionage Lindy Hop: 27
The dancers who earned the three highest scores were at the top of their game Monday as they were also the top three scorers for their second routine. Second round dances were performed in honor of Michael Jackson, whose “Bad” album was released 25 years ago. Round two scores from the judges:
Shawn and Derek, Argentine Tango to “Bad”: 29
Melissa and Tony, Argentine Tango to “Dirty Diana”: 30
Apolo and Karina, Rumba to “Man in the Mirror”: 30
Emmitt and Cheryl, Tango to “Leave Me Alone”: 27
Kelly and Val, Rumba to “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”: 28.5
Three perfect scores
Not even realizing what the Bhangra was prior to week 9, Shawn and Derek pulled off a perfect score after getting some additional help from another choreographer during rehearsals. They performed the Indian folk dance with a Knight Rider theme as the first dance of the evening and they nailed it.
Len: I tell you what, shut up, close the door. Miss Dynamite was fantastic!
Melissa and Tony earned a perfect 10 for their Argentine Tango during the second round of dancing. Tony had hurt his back the day prior to competition, but insisted that he wasn’t going to disappoint Melissa, so pushed through after being medically cleared to dance. Dancing to “Dirty Diana”, they earned laudatory comments from all three judges.
Len: Well, for two of our couples, tonight is their last dance, and I will be really disappointed if you don’t come back next week.
Bruno: Dirty, nasty, wicked, devil of a woman, you were possessed out there … you really excelled all expectations, you deserve to be in the finals.
Carrie Ann: Dirty Diana, I would like to introduce you to Magnificent Melissa! Beyond anything I could have imagined for you … look at you .. lifts out of this frickin world!
Apolo and Karina’s Rumba to “Man in the Mirror” during the second round was the third dance to receive a perfect score. I thought the dance lacked some connection between the two dancers, and that Apolo looked like he was trying too hard. The judges obviously thought differently.
Carrie Ann: That’s what I’m talking about, you don’t have to overdance in this competition to reach perfection. You reached into my heart and melted it.
Len: It was like the sea, wave after wave of effortless motion … calmness, captivating.
Bruno: Get down on it, Apolo. You nailed it. That was perfectly pitched between sensuality and romance.
The combined scores from judges for Monday night’s semifinal competition:
Shawn and Derek: 59
Melissa and Tony: 57.5
Apolo and Karina: 57
Emmitt and Cheryl: 54
Kelly and Val: 54
Shawn and Derek came out the winners in week 9 for judges’ scores, but all five couples’ performances during the semifinal competition were worthy of a win, so it’s going to come down to fan votes as to which two will be going home during Tuesday’s double elimination.
Which three couples will advance to the finals? Tune in to ABC on Tuesday, Nov 20 at 8 p.m., 9 Central.
