The finalists from “Dancing with the Stars” and their professional partners from the all-star season flew on a private jet from Los Angeles to New York City early this morning to appear on “Good Morning America’s” All-Star After Party. On Nov. 28, winner Melissa Rycroft, 2nd place finisher Shawn Johnson and 3rd place finalist Kelly Monaco appeared on “GMA” to talk about their experiences on “Dancing with the Stars” and to take one final spin on the improvised dance floor.
“GMA” aired several segments on Wednesday and the extended interview gave viewers an insider’s look at the most popular season of “DWTS” to date. Winner Melissa Rycroft was still on an emotional high and said on Wednesday morning, “This whole season, Tony and I underestimated ourselves. We didn’t really have anything to prove, so we went out there with confidence.” Melissa’s husband appeared on camera from Dallas and said to his champion wife, “You never cease to amaze me. I knew you could do it.” Melissa in turn thanked her family and supporters and added, “They were my biggest support system I had all season.”
Melissa’s partner, Tony Dovolani, was still very jubilant about his first ever win after 14 seasons and appeared on camera with his young daughter. “I did this for her,” he said of Tuesday night’s victory. “Everything I do, I do for my kids,” he added. He went on to explain that the victory was especially sweet because it happened on his 13th wedding anniversary and the day before his home country Albania’s 100th anniversary. “It’s unreal,” he said with unbridled enthusiasm.
Dovolani also had a lot of great things to say about partner Melissa Rycroft. “ I’m so pleased and grateful to Melissa because not only did she do it for me, but for the entire family.” The dancing duo surprised everyone on Tuesday night when they upset the heavy favorites, Olympian Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough.
Host George Stephanopoulos said to Shawn, “You guys can really put on a show!” Concerning his decision to repeat a dance that broke the rules, Derek Hough explained on “GMA,” ”It was an all-star season. Honestly, it was just about entertaining all the people and pushing it. I’m so proud of what we accomplished and what we did. Shawn was sensational.” On Monday night’s performance show, Shawn and Derek danced with the Fierce Five from the 2012 Olympics. “Being part of the finale with my girls meant the world to me,” Johnson stated.
Derek Hough explained why he got emotional in a piece that aired on “DWTS on Tuesday. “I had a moment about how much this show meant to me and the memories of everything. The show is such a positive thing,” the pro said. Could it be that Derek is not returning next season?
“GMA” host Lara Spencer talked to finalist Kelly Monaco and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy. All season, fans have wondered about a possible romantic connection, but the partners remained mum about their status. “I really love my friend,” was all Monaco would say about Val. She did however state that this season meant a lot to her. “I started to feel validated by being in the finals with these two amazingly talented women.”
Melissa Rycroft, Shawn Johnson and Kelly Monaco all played a silly game on “GMA” called “Two To Tango.” Tony revealed that his most embarrassing costume this season was his caveman outfit. Kelly revealed that there are two sides to her partner: Valentin, the dance instructor and Val, her friend. “There are so many things I love about Val.” She also said that the craziest place they ever practiced a dance was in a rooftop pool.
In the end, the three finalists danced a swan song with their partners on an improvised dance floor. All did very well and proved why they made it to the finals. “It was definitely the best season ever,” Dovolani said.
Yes, it was. Thanks, ABC and “Dancing with the Stars” for ten weeks of big moves, sizzling moments and a highly competitive finale.
