Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy put on quite a show during the performance portion of the DWTS semi-finals on Nov. 19. But once again, the judges’ scores didn’t seem to reflect the performances leaving Kelly and Val at the bottom of the heap. Zap2it.com caught up with Kelly and Val after the show for some pointed commentary.
During the “odd dance” portion of the show, Kelly and Val danced a “Surfer” Flamenco. Val stripped down to a pair of Speedos and played his surfer part well. Bruno said it lacked Flamenco “placement.” Carrie Ann called it robotic. Len said it had good attack and energy, but it wasn’t a technical Flamenco. The score was a measly 25.5.
“Whose idea was it to put Val in a Speedo? ‘Mine,’ said Kelly.”
“And Val just said OK?”
“‘Yeah, of course,’ said the man with the six-pack abs.”
Their second dance was a sensual Rumba performed to Michael Jackson’s song “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” The judges raved, calling it “smoldering, driven by desire, a lovely balance between control and emotion with fantastic lines and shapes.” But once again, when the scores came out, it only earned a 28.5.
Maybe the judges didn’t like that kiss at the end. Was it spur of the moment?
“No, it was planned,” Kelly told us. “It was part of the choreography.”
When a reporter jokingly asked how long they rehearsed the kiss, Val deadpanned, “Endless hours.”
That was all in fun, but Val had no problem getting serious and voicing his opinion on the scoring.
“We’re being crucified for things that others are embraced and complimented on — and vice versa, you know. That’s frustrating because we’ve invested a lot of time in mechanics, and none of that was appreciated at all.”
Kelly and Val know that their fans are keeping them on the dance floor. “Our fans are incredible,” raved Val, marveling at “the love and response we’ve gotten.”
Kelly said that their “fans are everything.” They’ve been at the bottom of the leader board many times and are still dancing.
There have been rumblings all season about unfair scoring. And while it is a combination of judges’ scores and fan votes that keep a couple in the ballroom, there are times you wonder what’s going on at the judges’ table.
The “Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars” results show is tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. on ABC. Two more couples will be going home, leaving three to dance in next week’s finals.
What do you think? Will Kelly and Val be going home? Don’t miss a step!
