“Dancing With the Stars” winds down with three dance couples performing two dances on Monday, Nov. 26 during the finals to determine who will be crowned the true DWTS All Stars. The first dance each couple performed was one they deemed a favorite from earlier in season 15. Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough chose the Quickstep, which earned them a score of 26.5 during week 3.
Shawn and Derek knew they broke some rules during the original performance of the dance, but stuck to the same choreography because they wanted to entertain the audience and their fans even more than they wanted to impress the judges. It might work out in their favor with fan votes, but, much as with their original Quickstep performance, it didn’t work with the judges.
Carrie Ann: What can I say, it’s a fan favorite, but the points do matter … I’m sad that you chose not to follow the rules. Pretty much the same as I saw last time .. I’m disappointed, but I hope it pays off for you.
Len: More body contact when you were in hold (this time), but you’re not allowed to break hold, which you did … You’re not allowed to do lifts, which you did. You’ve left me nowhere to go.
Bruno: You’ve broken the rules … We are bound by the rules, but it takes nothing away from your achievement.
On a night when they should have been dancing perfect dances for perfect scores, Shawn and Derek took a chance, and going out on that limb earned them a score of 27 for their first dance of the evening.
The Supersized Freestyle portion of the finals made the evening a little brighter for Shawn and Derek when the couple appeared on the dance floor accompanied by the U. S. Women’s Gymnastics Team under huge letters that spelled out SHAWN. (See video above). This writer thought the name in lights was a bit over the top, but the couple’s freestyle routine with the Fierce Five quickly pushed those thoughts aside. The lifts were gutsy, and the finale with Shawn on Derek’s shoulders where she leaned forward and appeared to fall to the floor into a roll was impressive. The judges agreed, granting them three paddles bearing 10s — a perfect score of 30.
Carrie Ann (pointing): You are incredible … that was supersized and sensational (on her feet) the Fab Five and you little miss … We’ve been waiting for this and you did not disappoint.
Len: In freestyle you’ve got to expect the unexpected and this was unexpected. This was a medley of Shawn and Derek’s greatest moves … gold medal performance.
Bruno: Fearless flawless, explosive, brilliance … fantastic night, all three goddesses tonight have been astonishing.
Meliss and Tony earned two perfect scores on Monday. On a night when perfect performances should have been expected, did Shawn and Derek make the right move by taking the chance with their Quickstep, hoping the fan votes would override the judges’ scores? One more dance on Tuesday remains between them and the DWTS mirrorball trophy. Watch the final results on Tuesday, Nov. 27 on ABC.
