I was in my local beauty supply store and I was in the skin care aisle. Low and behold, I saw the Dudu Osun Black Soap, all stacked up nice and neat on the shelf. I decided against getting it the first time and got the Queen Helene Apricot Scrub and the Mud Masque. I started thinking that I should have bought that soap while I was there. So before I went back to get it, I started looking at Youtube videos and reading reviews on the net. A lot of people swore by this soap. I bought 2 boxes while I was there. I have been using this soap for a month now and I think that I can give an initial review. I have used this soap once before, but I stopped using it because it burned my face so bad. I mean really bad. But I gave up too quickly because I felt that it was too strong for me.
So, what is Dudu Osun? Dudu Osun is another natural black soap, but from Nigeria. It is made from all natural ingredients and it is suppose to help to get rid of acne and fade scars. It is 150 grams in size, so you get a big bar for the money. I spent in total for 2 boxes, about $7 dollars and that is including tax.
The ingredients are:
- Pure Honey
- Shea Butter
- Osun (camwood)
- Palm Kernel Oil
- Cocoa Pod Ash
- Palm Bunch Ash
- Aloe Vera
- Lime Juice
- Essential Oil Blend
- Water and Fragrance
The ingredients look fabulous, right? That is what caught my attention the first time and now. It almost has the same exact ingredients that West Africa Black Soap has, but with the added aloe vera, lime juice and the essential oil blend. What does it look like? It has the similar color of West Africa Black Soap, but it is made into a soap like form. It does not crumble as quick as West Africa Black Soap, but if you leave it in a moist place, oh you most definitely will have a pile of liquid all over the place. I seen a lot of reviews that said that this soap stains towels, tubs etc, but I have yet to find this to happen. It does wash out a brown color, but not to the point where it stains anything. I sometimes use a towel or a wonder pad in the shower (wonder pads are exfoliating little pads that cleanses the skin and gets rid of dead skin cells) and my towel is still the same color.
The smell? To me, the smell is very earthy, but a slight fragrance. It smells a bit like the lime juice that is in it, but put an earthy smell along with it. Very hard to describe. I cannot go pass my bathroom to take the soap and smell it. It smells really good to me. When you first put it in your hands, it lathers up. When I say later up, I mean a lot of lather. It has some crazy lather! So, if you rub it one or two times in your hands, that should be enough to get your face, your neck and probably your chest too! Just kidding, but that is how much lather it can build with a few rubs in your hands.
When I first started, I wet my face and used warm water. Then after a few seconds of rubbing it on my face, I would wash it off and pat dry. This is where I made the mistake. My face again felt like it was on fire! I know I did this for about a week. I went to Youtube and I saw someone mention that the same thing that I was going through. She said first while using cool water, take the later with one hand, rinse that hand and get the lather from the other hand, then use that on your face. Rinse with cool water. I thought maybe she has something there. We are taught that warm water will open up the pores and cool water closes them. This is true with most soaps, but in this case, if you use warm water with this soap, you are asking for it because remember, this soap has acid in it, meaning the lime juice. Cool water will help to soothe the skin while in turn, helping the soap to get the job done.
I started using that method and after a couple of days, my face improved dramatically! My face felt refreshed, clean and soft! So, I use this soap once in the morning and once at night. This soap is very drying, to the point where it feels squeaky clean. Even with the shea butter in it, if you are using this soap, make sure to get a heavy-duty moisturizer. Shea butter is really good to use with it. I use Anew Reversalist day cream in the daytime and Anew Genics night treatment cream at night. If I feel like I need to use shea butter, I use that at night. It gives you a glow, but it can be greasy to use in the daytime. At least to me, especially if you are wearing makeup. If you do not use a moisturizer that will get the moisture job done, then you will be back and forth with a moisturizer trying to keep your face from being dry. After that first week, my face is much better.
I have one pimple that is in the center of my forehead, but the other pimples I had, they are gone. I know that got to be from the biotin I am taking. But my face is much brighter and even toned. I know it will take a good while to see some great improvements, but overall, I am very pleased with this soap, now that I have learned to use it correctly. I also use it on my body too and since then, the first bar went down considerably. I do not have any problems with using it on my body. Actually, my body had quicker results than my face. My back acne is gone, but I am dealing with the scars that was left from it.
If you do try this soap, make sure to test it first to see how you like it. If you follow the steps like I said earlier, you should be okay.
