The Xbox 360 Camo Headset by dreamGEAR is a cheap third-party alternative gaming headset for Xbox 360 users. Unfortunately, the key word here is “cheap” and you get what you pay for.
The first thing you will notice upon taking this headset out of the package is that it is made with very cheap feeling plastic. The headset feels poorly constructed and more like a toy than an actual piece of electronic equipment. Just holding this thing in your hand feels like it could break at any second.
It is a wired headset but rather than using the standard “crown-like” design which goes on your head (which they call a “broadcaster headset”), it is just a single ear piece. It can go on either ear, which is nice, but it doesn’t have a very customizable fit. The ear piece itself is very loose-fitting. There’s no cushioning on the part that goes against your ear like on most headphones. It is not only uncomfortable having a hard piece of plastic jammed into your earlobe, but doesn’t fit very snugly either.
Another weird thing is the part that goes around you ear can actually swivel out completely the opposite way (see image two in the slide show above). What is the point of that? You can’t wear it this way because then the speaker in the ear piece wouldn’t even be in your ear!
The boom microphone can be adjusted slightly up or down, but not closer to or away from your face. This results in the microphone actually touching your cheek and there’s nothing you can do to move it away. Most other headsets have a microphone arm that can bend a little bit. Not this one. It is a fixed place arm that doesn’t bend in the slightest. This is a huge negative.
Poor construction aside, this headset doesn’t even work very well. The sound quality isn’t very good on either outgoing and incoming audio. Even with the volume all the way up, the sound that you hear when other people speak sounds like they are talking to you through one of those old walkie-talkies. I half-expected people to say “over” at the end of every sentence. Your voice also sounds more muffled when compared to either the Official Microsoft Wireless Headset or the Plantronics MX150 which I also tested.
Overall, this headset is terrible and I would not recommend it for anybody. It currently costs $9.99 at sites like Amazon but is not worth that price tag for the shoddy performance you get out of it. If you need a cheap headset, you are better off just going with the Official Microsoft Wired Headset. It’s not very good either but is leagues better than the dreamGEAR Camo Headset.
