On Saturday night, the current heavyweight champion, Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos, featuring his one shot knockout power, will be going up against the former UFC title holder Cain Velasquez who in the past has been more disciplined and tries to land his punches in combinations. Everyone who has ever fought can tell you, having and being able to deliver the knockout blow, can be all important.
Saturday’s bout is a rematch of their November, 2011 bout. On that night, Dos Santos caught Velasquez with a big overhand right that caught him behind his left ear. Hitting anyone on the back of the head, with a liver shot or on either the right or left side of the chin, is an automatic bullseye.
During today’s Press Conference, their final press conference, Dos Santos (15-1), mentioned that his ground game could be the key for his first submission victory. That bit of intelligence was more than likely meant as a diversionary tactic to throw Velasquez off his concern for Dos Santos’ mighty overhand right. Dos Santos, who is 28 years-old, stands 6’4” tall, weighs 238 lbs. and benefits from a 77” reach. He is from Santa Catarina, Brazil and fights out of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
Velasquez (10-1) has repeatedly stated that he isn’t feeling the pressure and will simply go out there and get his belt back. The last time he fought Dos Santos, he hurt his knee in practice and then come fight night he got cold-cocked.
Velasquez, who is 30 years-old, stands 6’1” tall, weighs 240 lbs., lives in San Jose, CA. He grew up in Yuma, Arizona and attended Arizona State University where he received his Bachelor of the Arts degree in Education.
Neither warrior knows what to expect other than a competitive fight. Someone’s going to get lucky and somebody’s going to get hurt. This is a fact of life when you compete in the UFC. The Co-main event featuring Jim Miller versus Joe Lauzon plus the undercard should also be entertaining.
