The Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships start tomorrow at Breckenridge at Peak 8 on the Freeway trail. If you like freestyle skiing and snowboarding, you’ll love this.
If you can get away and get to Breck tomorrow, do not miss the Men’s Freeski Big Air Final from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. You don’t have to call in sick all day to do it; just sneak out a little early from work. Of course, if you can see the other semi-final events tomorrow as well, then all the better.
We recently spoke with one of the favorites to win the Men’s Freeski Big Air and Slopstyle competitions, Nick Goepper, as he made his way through the I-70 corridor to prepare for the event. Goepper is a bit of an outlier in the ski world since he grew up in a small town in Indiana and only skied the Midwest until he was about 13, when he finally made it out west and competed at Mammoth.
Goepper’s first taste of the Colorado Rockies didn’t come until he was 15, when he competed at Breckenridge. Now 18, Goepper is a regular fixture on the freestyle skiing scene.
“I grew up in a little town called Lawrenceburg in Indiana. There was always a freeskiing scene at my little mountain in Indiana. There were older kids at the park who influenced me, and my dad and I would road-trip around the Midwestern states and go to big air contests and rail jams, which started my competitive career,” says Goepper. “We used to go to places like Bittersweet Mountain in Michigan, Cascade Mountain in Wisconsin, Holiday Valley in Missouri, and Appalachian Mountain in North Carolina.”
This stop on the Dew Tour this weekend is a sort of homecoming for Goepper; that Breckenridge competition when he was 15 was his first official pro competition.
“I love Breck; everything they do for the terrain park and the venue is top of the line. They’re always maintained well and they blow tons of snow for the parks, which enables us to build one of the best terrain parks for early season,” says Goepper. Goepper will also compete in Freeski Slopestyle this weekend.
Goepper joins a cast of free style skiers and boarders right out of central casting for this week’s Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships: Shaun White, Scotty Lago, Jack Mitrani, Luke Mitrani, Louri Podladtchikov, Mark McMorris, Sebastien Toutan, Torstein Horgmo and Eric Willett among the men competing, and Kelly Clark, Gretchen Bleiler, Elena Hight, Torah Bright, Jamie Anderson and Spencer O’Brien among the women.
In addition to the schedule of events at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Breck listed below, stop by the Stride Gum booth and check out the Gibbon Slackline Zone by Gibbon Slacklines from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
If you’re unfamiliar with the sport, which was also featured at the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Expo, slacklining is the act of balancing on a narrow, flexible piece of webbing usually anchored between two trees, and eventually doing flips, tricks and stunts once you get good.
Slacklining has been a highlight of the Ocean City and San Francisco Dew Tour stops earlier this year, where professional slackline competitions brought the crowds. Featured during her Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, the sport has also become a feature of Madonna’s current MDNA tour where three Gibbon athletes are performing with the Material Girl.
In other words, you really can’t go wrong in Breckenridge during the Dew Tour, and here’s the schedule…
