When you first became a massage therapist, you probably thought about all of the cool things you’d be able to do as you work with clients, help them through pain, and simply offer an hour of relaxation. As times goes on, though, your job will eventually take a toll on your body. You may need a sick day or you may become injured. You may simply get older and a little more tired. When these things happen, you’ll need a backup plan, but it may be worth considering a partnership or growth of your business.
Partnering with Another Therapist
One thing to consider is a partnership with another massage therapist. You’d have to choose a partner carefully so as not to steal each others clients. Look for someone with similar skills and abilities so that you can turn to each other if you are sick or injured and need someone to take over some of your appointments or fill in at a special event. This type of partnership is simple, provides unity, and does not involve any special business negotiations.
Start a Business Partnership
You could, of course, partner with another therapist or two to start a small massage business. This is ideal if you’d like to rent space but don’t want to be responsible for the rent on your own. You could find a small space with multiple rooms and split the rent and utilities, sharing common areas but personalizing your individual spaces. How you run the business and expenses might vary. Some people simply share the rent but run their own individual businesses. Others start one business and keep track of who has seen what clients, dividing the money appropriately after taxes and other expenses are paid. You could use a small business crm system to split up the monthly tasks and marketing projects so that everyone is equally involved, too.
Managing Other Therapists
If you’re a true entrepreneur at heart, you may simply want to open your own spa or massage location and manage other therapists. This will give you the opportunity to train therapists as to the specific methods and techniques you want used, to schedule therapists for accountability, and to add additional revenue methods (like spa techniques or the sale of retail products).
As a massage therapist, your options for continued growth are endless. Add more modalities through continuing education, find other therapists who complement or add to your abilities, and look for ways to work together as you grow. Be strong in your abilities and you’ll never have to fear competition from others. You can simply coexist and help each other.
