As we spend more time on social media sites, with more passwords and more interactions to remember, we need to remember to be careful to follow the rules of the site.
Now I am Not talking about all those terms of service agreements that most of us check without reading. Yes, they are important, and we should read these.
What I am talking about here are the additional rules that may or may not be written somewhere on the social media site.
Let’s take the social media site of Amazon. And, yes, it is a social media site because people post reviews that other people can then comment on.
For reviewers and authors on Amazon, the written (or equally likely unwritten) rules can be potential sand traps.
In my blog post “Staying Out of Hot Water With Amazon” (click here to read this post) I share the response to a question that author Kathleen M. Rodgers got about adding a book title at the end of a review that she writes.
Whether the answer she received is correct, or only one decided upon by a single responder, is unknown. And whether this answer, given a few months ago, is still correct is even more unknown.
But beware! If you ignore unwritten rules, you can find yourself in lots of hot water.
What to do?
Using common sense is a first step, although your common sense and, say, Amazon’s common sense may not be the same.
The second step is to read blog posts and tweets and Facebook updates that pertain to social media sites on which you are active. Try to keep up with the changes that these sites continually make.
These two steps are particularly important if you are using social media to promote a business or a book. You want to try not to get removed from a site because you did not follow the rules.
