Leave it to cable’s TLC to bring TV-watchers an up-close glimpse of culture that they don’t usually have access to. And with the channel’s now-broadcasting special, “Extreme Cougar Wives,” they’ve done it once more.
Although using the word “wives” in the title is a bit of a stretch, the word “extreme” isn’t. The cougars in “Extreme Cougar Wives,” in some instances, are beyond the “cougar” designation, meaning they hit the next level that is well beyond cougardom; namely, that of the “walrus.” (Yes, this Examiner refers to a woman who is much, much older than her younger man as being a long-in-the-tooth walrus.)
Hattie Weiner, 76, for instance, is the most sexually charged cougar (walrus) among the three women profiled in the TLC special, which is airing through at least Dec. 3 at this writing. She’s hit the talk-show circuit a bit, too, in the name of embracing her lifelong status of loving sex, and in particular, with younger–much younger–men.
“An actual attractive, sexual, older woman is a woman that younger men lust after,” espouses Hattie, who admits that some people find her perennially “young energy” and taste for sex with younger men “sick.” But she’s living a lusty life to the fullest and not worried about the haters.
Then there’s Kevin 21, and his lady love, Jude, 53, whom he first met when he was 14 and dating her daughter. They’re the most touchy-feely of the relationships profiled, and Kevin’s libido is clearly easily ignited, as demonstrated by his readiness to engage in makeout sessions with Jude whenever the, um, mood arises, including during one uncomfortable-to-endure session in a recording-studio sound booth.
Of course, the marriage-minded Kevin’s not concerned with the 33-year age difference that exists with Jude, but Kevin’s family is another story; never mind that his disapproving mom is two years younger than girlfriend Jude.
The show’s third cougar spotlight is on Stephanie, 65, and her bartender-boyfriend Octavio, who is 37 years her junior. He’s always had a taste for “older women,” he concedes, and Stephanie caught his eye the moment she walked into his bar.
“You can’t help who you fall in love with,” the widowed Stephanie tells viewers, even if her devoted boyfriend’s pals–and customers–don’t seem to approve of his “cougar” girlfriend
Clearly, age is just a number for those profiled in “Extreme Cougar Wives,” the special. And one wonders if TLC is testing the waters to give one, or all, of these women a reality show in the future?
