Ok take one part Microvolts, one part Team Fortress 2, one part UFC, one part every FPS PvP game, shake and pour. Original? Not really. District 187 by Netmarble may not be the most original game but it has enough parts from enough games that it works. Much like the film industry the days of originality are coming to a close.
Like any PvP based game it has different match styles like Team Death Match (total kills), Bomb (focal point match like capture the flag) and Round (team that wins say 2 out of 3 rounds). Again not original. Even the soundtrack gives you the feeling that you left your UFC game running in the background.
Multitude of servers allows a match to seem to always be open. It is a F2P yet you can use in game coinage you earn from playing to buy gear. Gear that is on a timer. Much like Microvolts. So if you play continuously you will reap what you sow. If you play sporadically then just get used to being rolled and save your points for that weekend when you are going to geek out.
Although this may sound like a negative review it is actually the opposite. The maps so far are nice and small so very few places to hide. Still some hackers and gamers finding exploits but hey even if you play Monopoly against a 5 year old – don’t let them be the bank! You are always going to have cheaters but the promising thing about exploits so far in D187 is that you can usually nail the wimp from a different angle or just lob a grenade at them.
Death is fast and sometimes it is in one shot. Almost a level of realism without the gore that seems to have permeated all the rest of the video game world. A nice change visually for us gamers who just want to PvP – shoot- die- respawn for revenge. Even spawn campers get rolled with your five second immunity timer. In the few seconds it takes to respawn you can see where people are setting up their ambushes or what part of the map they are heading towards. A well timed grenade or a room clearing unload of your clip as you round the corner can net you quite a few kills.
As per usual you have the gamers who whine and cry about OP weapons (over powered to you non-geeks) but every weapon has its drawbacks. No matter the weapon if you get shot betwixt the eyes you are going down. It is that simple. Even a knife to the face will do the trick. There is a level of “accuracy” built into the game so far that is nice. A shotgun is nasty but you need to be in a certain range. A sniper rifle is deadly but you need to be visible and your view is limited which makes a flank move on a sniper a thing of pure joy. An AK47 is just friggin sweet for all ranges. And no matter what gun you have if you have a grenade anywhere near you it’s lights out.
So do us all a favor. Die like a gamer. Learn the map. Respawn and take your beatings. We all are “noobs” so no need to cry over electronic death. You will respawn full health and full ammo. Heck you even have the option to swap weapons while you are waiting for a respawn. But don’t waste time because it is a short timer.
So if you want a game that has some realism but still video game visual then District 187 is worth a go. F2P so can’t argue about the cost. If you think a weapon is OP’d then grab one for yourself and use it until people start killing you so you can learn how to kill people with that gun. Fast paced and short respawn timer coupled with spawn immunity make D187 a good game to just log on and shoot people while trying to avoid eating a grenade or developing a third eye.
Until next time.
