Walt Disney World held its Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon on the evening of Nov. 10, and the nighttime race lasted into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Anton Van Zyl won the race for the third year in a row, and Carrie Majeranowski placed first in the women’s division for the second straight year.
Van Zyl, 39, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. finished the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon, a nighttime race, in 1:14:49. He stopped along the way for photos, and finished eight seconds in front of Rolando Cruz Castro of Puerto Rico, 33, who crossed the line at1:14:27. Michael Creason, 41, of Charlotte, NC, took third of 1:15:48.
“You know you feel a little pressure after you’ve won twice and a lot of people were expecting me to do well,” admitted Van Zyl, who ran an Ironman triathlon in Hawaii just before the Disney event. “So I wasn’t so sure (if Castro would win), but I pulled it out somehow.”

Majeranowski, 36, of Satellite Beach, Fla. took first with a finish time of 1:27:16. The Satellite Beach, Fla. runner won the 2011 Wine & Dine Half Marathon in 1:26:10.
26-year-old Meaghan Munroe of Brookline, Mass., came in second with 1:28:43. Samantha Helgesen, 24, of Bristol, Wis. came in third at 1:29:46.
runDisney’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon attracted 14,000 registered athletes to compete in the nighttime race. Among those registered who finished were Justin Legg, a double-lung transplant survivor who raised $50,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Legg, a former Navy Seal, met the organ donor’s mother for the first time at the Wine & Dine Half Marathon finish line.
Ashley Pierce experienced another Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon memorable finish. Her husband, Coast Guardsman Bohlman “Bo” Pierce, surprised her at the finish line. He was on leave from his post in Bahrain, arriving a day earlier than expected to give her a medal at the finish line.
All Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon finishers received a commemorative medal.
The Wine & Dine course took runners and walkers around Walt Disney World Resort. The 13.1 mile race started at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, moved throughDisney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and finished at Epcot.
