Derek Hough’s risky decision to repeat a Quickstep that broke the rules may have cost Shawn Johnson the championship Tuesday night. The season 15 All-Star trophy for “Dancing with the Stars” was instead awarded to Melissa Rycroft and her partner Tony Dovolani on Nov. 27 when the show aired at 8 p.m.
Going into the finals, Shawn Johnson and her partner Derek Hough were favored to win the All-Star season of “Dancing with the Stars”. However, when the points were tallied, Melissa Rycroft and partner Tony Dovolani took home the mirror ball trophy. The two couples had been running neck and neck for the latter half of the season with Shawn having a slight edge in the scores.
The three couples headed to the finals were all going to perform three dances: the supersized freestyle, and Instant dance and a repeat of a dance they performed earlier in the season. They could make modifications to the repeat dace if they chose but the idea behind it was to show improvement since the first time they performed it.
Derek chose the Quickstep the couple performed in week 3 for Iconic Dance week. The routine was a crowd pleaser but displeased the judges intensely because the pair broke the rules for a quickstep by repeatedly breaking hold. In the rehearsal footage for the finals, Shawn was seen to question Derek about repeating this mistake. She wondered if it wouldn’t affect their scores again. Derek felt it was more important to please the crowd. In the end, the couple repeated the dance number without change and the judges penalized them again.
Instead of modifying the dance to comply with the rules or picking another dance that could have earned them a perfect score, the couple stuck to their guns and received a 27, leaving them at the bottom of the leader board after Monday night’s performances.
Even the perfect score they received for their freestyle and again on Tuesday night for their Instant Dance could not pull them up enough. They remained at the bottom of the leader board. When viewer votes were factored in, Shawn and Derek ended season 15 of “Dancing with the Stars” in second place.
Did Derek’s decision cost Shawn Johnson the “Dancing with the Stares” mirror ball trophy? It’s hard to say for sure but those extra couple of points might have made all the difference in the world.
